Description

No. 818,190. PATENTED APR. 17, 1906.
H. PHILLIPS. GOMPARTMENT BOX FOR BOTTLES OR THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 30. 1904.
MEI-classes tain new and useful Improvements HYMAN PHILLIPS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COMPARTIVIENT-BOX FOR BOTTLES OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 17, 1906.
Application filed December 30, 190 Serial No. 239,037.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HYMAN PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented cerin Compartment-Boxes for Bottles or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in compartment boxes or cases such as are commonly used by brewers, bottlers, &c., for containing beer, mineral waters, and the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a box or case of this general character of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a compact, strong, and light construction and of a convenient and advantageous form, which shall be possessed of increased durability and shall be capable of ready repair in case of wear or damage, where by an important economy is afforded to the users of such boxes or cases.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved compartment box or case whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, cheaper, and more durable and is otherwise better adapted and made more convenient for use than similar compartment boxes or cases heretofore devised, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of the improved compartment box or case with one portion thereof broken out and shown in section for illustration of certain features of construction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved box with one end portion of the upper part thereof broken away and shown in section to illustrate certain features of the construction and arrangement of the handholds of the improved box.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the lIrox 1n the plane indicated by the line at :1; in
is shown in the drawings, the improved compartment box or case is provided with a metallic body portion preferably formed from a single piece or sheet of metal bent to produce opposite side walls 1 1 and end walls 2 2, the box or case shown in the drawings being of elongated form, although this of course is immaterial to my invention.
3 indicates a beaded or wired edge produced around the upper portions of the side and end walls 1 and 2 of the box or case and so arranged as to overhang upon the inner surface thereof, leaving a smooth and unbroken surface upon the outer side of each wall of the box or case, so that the boxes or cases may be packed closely together with their walls contacting throughout, whereby space is economized and rattling about of the cases when closely packed is prevented.
The improved box or case has a wooden bottom 4, held in position by means of nails or the like driven through the lower edges of the metal walls of the device, and said bot tom is provided with apertures 6 6 at intervals and adapted for draining the interior of the box or case from water or other liquids accummulating therein, as will be readily understood. The arrangement of the bottom 4 is such as to permit the bottom to be removed and replaced in case it should become rotted, broken, or cracked, so that as long as the me tallic body portion of the box or case remains intact the device may readily be rendered serviceable.
7 7 indicate metal strips held by rivets 8 along opposite sides of the lower portion of the box or case just above the bottom 4, each such strip 7 having corrugations 9 9 produced in it, whereby there are formed spaces or separations within the box or case adapted to snugly receive the lower ends of the bottles, as indicated at a in dotted lines on the drawings, the proportions of the box or case shown being such as to adapt it for receiving two longitudinal rows of six bottles each. The bottles in each row are engaged in the separations between the corrugations of the corresponding strip 7 and are thereby held against rattling about, and between the two rows of bottles-and along the central part of the box or case in a plane ust above the corrugated strips 7 is arranged a longitudinal brace or stay-rod 10, the opposite ends of which are secured to the end walls 2 2 of the device. The brace or stay-rod 10 serves to separate the bottles of the two rows and prevents contact between the bottles, so that breakage is avoided.
The preferred construction of said brace or stay-rod is shown clearly in the drawings and consists in forming the device from sheet metal in hollow rectangular cross-section,
whereby a maximum of strength and stifl ness is imparted to the brace or stay-rod Without necessary increase in weight, the opposite edges of the sheet metal piece or strip from which the brace or stay-rod is formed being lapped over each other, as indicated at 12 in Fig. 3. The ends of the brace or stay-rod are also provided with outwardly-directed flanges 11 11, integrally produced upon the extremity of the opposite side walls of the hollow brace or tie-rod and securely riveted upon the end walls 2 of the box or case. Above the brace or tie-rod 10 and at right angles thereto, being extended centrally and transversely across the elongated box or casing near its upper part, is arranged an auxiliary brace or tie-rod 13, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The detailed construction of the auxiliary brace or tie-rod 13 and its attachment in the box or case is identical with the construction and arrangement of the brace or tie-rod 10 above described. This arrangement of the braces or tie-rods affords great strength and stiffness to the metal walls of the box or case, so that the same are not liable to be readily crushed or badly dented and the construction is extremely light.
At opposite ends of the box or case are produced handholds 14 in the form of openings in the end walls 2, the metal of which said end walls are formed being slitted and open inwardly to produce rolled or rounded beads or enlargements 15 15 above and below the openings, and at the lateral edges of said openings there are attached, by means of rivets 17, other vertically-extended rolled or rounded beads or enlargements 16, also proj ecting within the interior of the box or case in line with the upper and lower beads 15 15, said vertical beads or enlargements 1 6 having their outer end portions extended over the rolled edges of the metal at the sides of the openings at which the handholds are produced, said outer portions of the parts 16 serving to receive the rivets 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This arrangement is very inexpensive and provides a rounded enlargement or head along each edge of the opening in the end wall of the box or case, so that there are no rough edges exposed which would be likely to cut the hands.
From the above description it will be read ily understood that the improved compart- Inent box or case constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and is at the same time very strong, light, and durable and is capable of being readily repaired, so as to aflord important economy on the part of the user.
The device is also capable of very convenient use and is adapted to hold the bottles securely in position by reason of the employment of the braces and of the corrugated partitionstrips 7, and it will be obvious from the above description that the device is capable of some modification without I material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement herein set forth. For example, in lieu of the form and arrangement of the compartment-strips 7 shown in the drawings other equivalent devices may be employed, and instead of providing said strips with the rounded corrugations illustrated it is evident that the corrugations may be straight-sided and arranged at right angles or at acute angles to the side walls of the box or case in position for engagement between the bottles.
Having thus described my invention, what.
I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body portion formed from sheet metal with side and end walls, a wooden bottom extended across said body portion, attaching devices carried by the body portion and detachably engaged with the wooden bottom and braces extended across the interior of the body portion and formed from strips of metal bent in rectangular hollow form and having at their ends flanges attached to the opposite walls of the body portion.
2. A device of the character described comprising a sheet-metal body portion having side and end walls and a hollow, rectangular crosssectioned partition-strip formed from sheet metal and extended across the body portion and having lateral ears or flanges at its opposite ends attached to opposite walls of the body portion.
3. A device of the character described comprising a metal body portion having side and end walls, a wooden bottom inserted in and carried by said body portion and a brace extended across the interior of the body portion with ends attached to opposite walls thereof, said brace being formed from sheet metal bent in rectangular hollow cross-sectional'form.
Signed at Cincinnati, Ohio, this 13th day of December, 1904.
HYMAN PHILLIPS.
