Letters Patent No. 79.692. dated July 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN co-AL-soUr r Esf fiilge 51:13am: ttftmt tn in than 32mm fitted mil: uniting glut fliilgt same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that WGYTHOMASSCANTLIN and JAMES M. ScANrLmoi-T Evansville, in the county of Vanderhurg, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Scuttles; and we do hereby declare that the following in. full, clear, and exact description thereof,'which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1' isa central vertical section of our improved scuttle, through the line m a: of fig. 2.
Figure'2 is a bottom view of the some. 7 v
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. I
The object of this invention is to provide a'simple, durable, and superior coal-scuttle, the construction of which is hereinafter setforth.
By reference to the drawings, A is the body of the scuttle, and B the bottom of the same. The body-is preferably of sheet iron, though other metal willanswer. The bottom is preferably of cast iron, it being formed with a conical rim or flange,'over which the lower edge of the bodyis bent or lapped, as shown at d d, fig. 1, thereby dispensing with rivets or other like fastenings.
Four legs, a a a a, are'cast on the bottom, also the diagonal ribs or feathers, e e e e, and at the intersection of these ribs :1. boss or iifth leg, 6, is cast.- i I V I The body is formed with a horizontal fluting,ns shown'et c, fig. 1, which assists the lapped edge to hold the bottom firmly afiixed to the body. l i I l The legs a a a a being a continuation of the flange of the bottom, the edge of the bottom does not lap over them, but merelyre sts against them atthat poin t.
equal height as the other legs, thereby serving as a fil'th leg. This would be an equivalent modification of our invention, withontabsolutely forming the boss 6. The ribs are for the purpose of strengthening the bottom.
Having thus describedour invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A coal-scuttle having the body A formed with a fluting, a, and the edge or border just below this fiuting lapped over aconical flange-of the bottom, B, the said bottom-being formed with legs'a a a a, 6, and ribs e e e e, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. I
The above specification of our invention signed by us, this 22d day of April, 1868.
THOMAS SCANTLIN, JAMES M. SOANTLIN.
