Letters Patent No. 92,341, dated July 6, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEYS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters-Patent and making p artof the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIA MUSBAOH and CHA'nLEs B. SMITH, of Middletown, in the county of Orange, and State of New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Tops; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyiu g drawings, formingpart of this specification.
I This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in fixtures for-topping out chimneys; and. consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of the article on the top of a chimney, the latter being shown in red color, and the section being through the'line x a: of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a top or plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the chimney-top. 1 A is the base, which is of cast-iron, with a projecting flange, B, which surrounds the top of the brick work, as seen in the drawing, thus protecting the top of the chimney. This base A is open, the orifice being equal to the area of the inside or flue of the chimney. I
One or more cross-bars pass across the orifice, through which the vertical rod 0 passes.
D is the cap, also made of cast-iron, with four arms, E, extending from the centre.
F represents pieces of slate or metal, or other incombust-iblc material in the form of plates, which are secured between the base and the cap. For thus securingthe plates F, there are flanges, 9, cast on the top of the base, at each of its corners, and the under sides of the arms E- are recessed out, into which recesses the top ends of the plates F enter, the whole' being firmly held together by the central bolt O.- This bolt may extend down and be secured toa cross-piece in the chimney fine, if desired. l
The plates 1 are so arranged that a triangular space, H, is left beneath each of the arms E, throughwhich tlie'sinoke escapes. 1 I I It will be seen that the central portion of the cap D represents a square, but it is of far less area than the base.
The central plate F, as well as the other plates, stand.
inclining back ii'om the lower ends up to the cap,'.as seen in the drawing, which prevents the eutrauceof water or snow in the chimney.
Having thus described our invention,
We'claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I The chimney-top, constructed as described, of the inclined bevelled plates F F, secured to the cap D and E, and base A B, by means'of the recesses in the former, the curved flanges g'upon the latter, and the cen tral bolt 0, passing through both, all arranged as here 'in shown and described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of our invention, signed by us, this 13th day of February, 1869.
WM. MUSBAUH. CHARLES E. SMITH.
