i UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
B. A. JOHNSON, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA.
IM PROVEM ENT IN STREET-LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 57,148, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. JOHNSON, of Jeffersonville, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art t0 make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists, principally, in forming the bottom or base portion ot' a streetlantern of cast-iron or other suitable metal and the body of sheet metal, whether tin or galvanized iron or other suitable sheet metal, whereby sufficient strength and lightness in weight are secured, in connection with durability and convenience of handling, and also the expense of the lantern greatly lessened; and it also consists in combining with the bottom or base portion of the lantern a novel mode of' securing the lantern to its post, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvementsin street-lanterns are illustrated, Figure 'l being an elevation of one side ofthe lantern made according thereto, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line x x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indica-te like parts.
A in the drawings represents the bottom or base portion of the lantern, which is to be made of cast-iron or other suitable metal, and of the ordinary form. To and around the sides of this base A of the lantern its body-frame B is to be secured, which body-frame I make of sheet-tin or galvanized iron, or any other suitable sheet Inetal, and of the general form and style adopted for street-lanterns, or of any other desired and suitable style, the several sides of this bodyframe B having glasses C C inserted in it for the purpose of shedding or diffusing the light imparted by the lamp or each of its corners and extending toward its center, is secured a concentric sleeve or ferrule, F, in a vertical position, and with Its upper end in a plane a short distance below the Vlantern-base A. This ferrule or sleeve F is made of a tapering shape upon its inside, and is provided with a series of projecting lugs, G, at suitable points around its outside to receive the arms E, by which it is secured to the lantern-base A. By this ferrule or sleeve the lantern is secured to and over the upper end of its post or other stand or support provided for its reception, it being only necessary that such post should be so formed at its upper end as to receive the said ferrule and hold it at the desired height.
From the above description it is plain to be seen that, by constructing the lantern in the manner explained, not only is sufficient strength obtained, but great lightness in weight, thus rendering the lantern not only durable but convenient to handle, the mode of securing it to its post or support being also exceedingly simple, convenient, and ecient. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A street-lantern having its base A made of cast-iron or other suitable metal and its body B of sheet-tin or other suitable sheet metal, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The ferrule or sleeve F, secured to the bottom or base A of a street-lantern by means of arms E, substantially as described.
BENJAMIN A. JOHNSON.
