Description

o .am 'tg @timed J.. H. SHLMMONS, O1" LAWRENCE, KANSAS, ASSI-GNOR TO HIMSEL AND S. RMAYBERRY lOF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent o. 87,S81, dated Mft/rch 16, 1869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. H. SHIMMONS, of Lawrence, in the county of Douglas, and State of Kansas, have invented a new and improved Sheet-Metal Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will` enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi' this specication.
This invention relates to an improved arrangement of the form of the sheets for making sheet-metal roofs, whereby the seams will admit of being bent in therequired form, without "cracking the metal.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of sheet-metal roof, showing my improved joint at A, and the joint as commonly constructed at B;
Figure 2 represents a sheet formed according to my improvement, and .partly folded at the edge, to form the joint; and
Figure 3 represents the same whenv fully folded, to form a double joint.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In order to make the joints suiciently tight, it is necessary to make them double, especially in that part which lies flat upon the roof; and they are commonly made double throughout; but, when madefdouble, they are very liable to crack at the corners,0, when turned up, as represented at B, owing to the greater length of the curve which one sheet is compelled to make over.the other, due to the great thickness of the joint.
To overcome this difficulty, I propose to so cut away the corners oi' the sheets, as represented at D, that so much of the seam as forms the bend at the corners, C, and the continuation of the same to the top, will be only a single lap, thereby lessening the thickness of the same one-half, and, consequently, the liability of the metal to crack,-in the same degree.
This I am enabled todo, as I have found, by practical experience, that, in this portion of the joints, it is not essential that it be double, but that a single seam will prevent leakage as well, and last as long, as a double seam in that portion which lies flat upon the roof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim .as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved method of forming double seams in the hat portion', and single seams in the vertical portions, of sheet-metal roofing, by means of the sheets formed as represented at D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
