To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. ROTHBARTH, a citizen of the United States, yand resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Caps or Ventilatore, of which the following is a specilication.

My invention relates to chimney caps and ventilators7 and its primary object is the production of a cap or ventilator which is simple in construction, cheaply manufactured, and

durable.

It also has for its object, the construction of a cap from a single sheet of metal, and one which will eectually prevent down drafts in a chimney or a ventilator flue and insure a good upward draft at all times and under all conditions.

The invention consists in a hood or cap having opposite openings and extended portions over said openings to prevent the wind passing directly down the chimney or ventilator iiue.

It also consists in the construction of the cap formed from a single piece of sheet metal; and in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts in the several figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved cap, showing the same applied to a chimney.` Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the same applied to a chimney. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2 2, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the sheet metal blank from which the cap is formed. Fig. 5 is an inverted perspective view of the cap partly formed. Fig. 6 is an inverted view of the complete cap.

The numeral 1 designates a chimney and 2 the cap applied to the upper end of the chimney.

The cap consists of a curved and longitudinal body portion 3 which sets over the 'liue and has end extensions 4 which project beyond the ends of th'e chimney and have their sides cut-away in a manner to gradually reduce their width toward their outer ends, as at 5; thus permitting the wind to pass underneath the extensions when passing along at right angles to the length of the cap, and consequently creating suction within the iiue. By cutting away the sides of the extensions, the wind passing along at an angle within 45 degrees to the longitudinal center, is given free access to pass through the cap and create a strong upward draftwithin the flue. At the ends, the depending sides of the cap are connected by angle members or connectors 6 which provide the necessary rigidity and support the ca properly upon the chimney by reason of t en' resting upon the upper end of the chimney and bearing against opposite sides. In this manner lengthwise movement of the cap is prevented. The depending sides and the angle members or connectors 6 have depending clips 7 secured thereto to which are attached wires 8 that are secured to the chimney by means of nails or hooks 9 driven between the bricks of the chimney, or in any other mannler;v thereby securely fastening the cap in p ace.

My improvedr cap is preferably formed of a single sheet of metal 10 of rectangular formation having portions cut-away at opposite ends near the side edges thereof to form notches 11 having each a straight side 12 parallel with the longitudinal edges of the blank and a curved side 13 meeting the inner end of the straight side and terminating in an incision 14 at right angles to said straight side. In this manner a pair of corner extensions 15 are formed at each end of the blank, and an intermediate extension 16 provided between each pair of corner extensions which form the end extensions 4 of the cap. The inner longitudinal marginal portions 17 of the corner extensions, defined by the inner longitudinal edges and the end edges of said extensions, the incisions 14 and the dotted lines 18, are bent to a right angle to the face of the blank. The blank is curved lengthwise into substantially U-shape, and the angular extensions 15 bent at right angles to the longitudinal to form the transverse anglemembers or connectors 6 of the cap. The

' ends of each pair of corner extensions forming said angle-members or connectors are riveted together or otherwise secured, as may be desired.

The blank above described may be used as an article of manufacture, and may be sold and shipped to be formed into a chimney-cap or cowl at the point of destination.

By constructing my improved cap from a single sheet of material, it can be cheaply and durably constructed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is,-

1, A chimney cap or the like consisting of a longitudinally curved body-portion adapted to fit over the top of the chimney with the longitudinal marginal portions thereof against opposite sides of the chimney, eXtensions at the ends of said body-portion curved to correspond to the latter and gradually narrowed toward their outer ends, and connectors at the ends of said body-portion bearing against the remaining sides of the chimney.

2. A chimney cap or the like consisting of a longitudinally curved body-portion adapted to fit over the top of the chimney with the longitudinal marginal portions thereof against opposite sides of the chimney, eXtensions at the ends of said body-portion curved to correspond to the latter and gradually narrowed toward their outer ends, and connectors of angle shape in cross section connecting the lower marginal portions of the body-portion at the ends thereof and bearing against the top and the remaining sides of the chimney.

3. As an article of manufacture, a metallic sheet or blank of substantially rectangular formation having two notches cut in each end, each notch having one side thereof in a straight line and parallel with the longitudinal edges of the blank and its other side curved to meet the inner end of its first-mentioned side, and an incision cut into the blank at the inner end of each notch at a right-an gle to the straight-lined side thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A chimney-cap or the like consisting of a longitudinal curved body-portion having integral end extensions, 4end connectingmembers formed by extensions of the bodyportion bent inward to overlap and lie against opposite ends of a chimney, and depending clips at the sides of the body-portion and at the overlapped ends of said connectingunembers whereby the cap may be fastened to the chimney.
