SHEATHING L No. 546,221. Patented Sept. 10,1895.
fizvenz'w I iea ars fi row/Q UNITED STATES PATENT rricni THEODORE l-I. BROWN, OF VIROQUA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOB TO MARY BROW'N AND W. E. CASSON, OF SAME PLACE.
SHEATHlNG-LATH.
QIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,221, dated September 10, 1895.
Application filed May 7, 1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Tnnononn I-I. BROWN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and now residing at Viroqua, in the county of Vernon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheathing-Laths; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sheathing-laths, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sheathing-lath constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same bent down to break the central joint. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a number of laths as they appear when secured to a roof.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the lath, made of wood and consisting of two sections D and E of peculiar shape connected together by a strip 13, all of which are formed in one piece. The section E comprises an inclined top a, aparallel bottom a, and vertical sides or, and d The connection or strip 13 is connected with the lower Serial No. 510,849. (No model.)
edge of section E and extends at an acute angle to said section. At its lower end the strip is connected with strip D, the top and bottom of which are inclined, but at a less angle than section E. The inner side or edge of this section D is perpendicular, while its outer edge is provided with a beveled tongue F at its upper side and a similar tongue G at its lower end, which extends or projects outward a greater distance than tongue F.
In using the lath it is placed on a roof and forced down flat thereon, causing the strip 13 to split at its junction with the section E, forming a crack which will allow the moisture of the mortar inserted in the space between the sections to escape.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article, a sheathing lath' comprisingthe inclined section E, having per pendicular sides, the section D, inclined at an angle to section E, and connected therewith by the inclined strips, the beveled tongue F at the outer upper edge of the section D, and the beveled tongue G, projecting beyond tongue F, at the lower outer edge of said section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE I-I. BROWN.
