ROOFING PLATE OR SHINGLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,372, dated December 6, 1892.

To otZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI H. MONTROSS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and 5 State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roofing Plates or Shingles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a roofing plate or shingle composed of a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material which has one edge or side turned up for forming a vertical or upright locking-tongue. The opposite side of the shingle is struck up or bent into a longitudinal rib of a curved or other required shape and transverse section, the depending edge of which is bent inwardly and upwardly upon itself and return-bent to form a vertical or upright locking loop or groove for engaging with the locking-tongue of the adjacent plate or shingle of the same row, and thus make a vertical or upright lock-joint, having a gutter and nailing strip integral therewith.
On reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part of this specification, Figure l is a top and perspective view of a roofing plate or shingle which embodies my invention; and Fig. 2 is afull-line transverse section through the line 1 2, Fig. 1, showing the locking-tongue, longitudinal rib, lockingloop, drip-gutter, nailing-strip, and the locking-tongue of an adjacent shingle in dotted ines.

A is a roofing plate or shingle composed of a single plate of sheet metal or other suitable material B, which has one side or edge turned up to form a longitudinal and vertical or upright locking-tongue C and its opposite side convexed or struck up to form a longitudinal rib D of a curved or any other required shape and transverse section. The depending edge e of said rib D is doubled or bent inwardly and upwardly and return-bent to form alongitudinal and vertical or upright locking loop or groove E. The inner side or return-bend d of said looking-groove E has a drip-gutter e and a nailing-strip f integral therewith. For ornamentation and imparting strength and rigidity the top of the shingle has struck up transverse ribs g h, and the bottom is illwardly bent and crimped at 'i In putting my invention in practice the first plate or shingle is properly laid on the roofboarding or shingle substructure and secured by nailing through its nailing-strip or edging f. The adjacent shingle is joined thereto by holding it at a convenient inclination and '60 slipping its locking-tongue G into the locking loop or groove E of the preceding shingle, after which it is pressed down and nailed. It will be seen that each following shingle of a row covers the preceding gutter e and overlaps the nailing-strip, whereby the nails are protected from sun-drawing.
I claim- 1. A roofing plate or shingle composed of a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable 7o material, which is longitudinally ribbed, said rib having its depending edge bent inwardly and upwardly upon itself and return-bent to form a vertical or upright longitudinal locking loop or groove, having a gutter integral therewith, for the purpose shown and described.
2. A roofing plate or shingle composed of a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is longitudinally ribbed, said rib having its depending edge bent inwardly and upwardly upon itself and return-bent to form a vertical or upright longitudinal locking loop or groove, having a gutter and a nailing-strip integral therewith, for the purpose shown and described.
3. A roofing plate or shingle composed of a single piece of sheet metal or othersuitable material, which has one edge turned up for forming a vertical or upright locking-tongue and the other edge longitudinally ribbed, which rib is bent inwardly and upwardly upon itself to form a vertical or upright longitudinal locking loop or groove, having a gutter and a nailing-strip integral therewith,f0r the purpose shown and described.
