SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,545, dated October 31, 1893.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. KINNEAE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention consists first, of certain irnprovements in what is called the ridge or hip roll of roofs; and second,of improvements in that kind of roofing plate shown in my Letters Patent of the United States No. 499,024, datedJune 6, 1893. l

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a part of a roof composed of my hip roll or ridge and roofing plates. Fig.

2 is a transverse sectional view of the ridge or hip roll; and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views, respectively, of the ridge and the roofing plate.

The ridge roll or hip is made in two parts l and 2, each of which has its upper edge cylindrically bent or curved, as shown at 3 and 4, so that when said edges are lapped or litted on to each other theyform akind of hinge and are movable with respect to each other to vary the angle made by the parts to accord with the pitch of the roof, and without materially affecting the security of the joint. The manner in which the angle of the ridge roll parts may be varied is illustrated by the dotted lines of Fig. 2. The lower or outer edges of the parts constituting the ridge roll are flanged or bent inward substantially at right angles to the plane of the parts to form supports, as shown at 5. The upper part of the ridge roll is supported at its under side and given stability by wooden blocks l0 nailed on to boards of the roof.

The roofing plate herein shown is made substantially like that illustrated in my application for patent hereinbefore referred to, eX- cept that in the present instance the lower folded edge, which forms the interlocking groove 6 and nailing strip 7, extends partially into the beaded or molded side edge, and that the upper edge, which fits into the groove 6 of an adjoining plate, is turned slightly upward, as shown at 8, and provided with a series of elevation or corrugations 9 which permit the free circulation of air between the parts below the said upturned edge so as to prevent leakage of water through the joint by capillary attraction. The bending of the nailing strip 7 and groove 6 so that they eX- tend into the molding or beading at the edge of the plate greatly strengthens the plate at that point and prevents leakage. Moreover a roof formed of these plates is more stable in its construction and less liable to injury by wind and water than when constructed of plates as heretofore made.

The ridge roll or hip will be made in sections interlocking in the same way as do the roof plates, and the improvements described in connection with such plates may be employed with great advantage in sections of the ridge roll or hip.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A ridge or hip roll for roofs formed of plates having upper' cylindrically bent or curved interlocking edges 3 4 constructed-so that when said edges are interlocked they will be movable laterally with respect to each other to adapt the plates to roofs of different pitch, the said plates also having their lower or outer edges bent to form supports 5, substantially as described.

2. A roofing plate having beaded or molded side edges, its upper edge formed with the projections or corrugations 9 and raised portionor edge 8, and its lower edge provided with the interlocking groove 6 and nailing strip 7, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
