NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
EDIVIN IIENSIIAIV, OF CLARINDA, IOIYA.
CHIMNEY COLLAR OR PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,093, dated February 25, 1896.
Application filed November 21, 1895, Serial No. 569,704. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN HEXSHAIV, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Clarinda, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented anew and useful Chimney Collar or Protector, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a collar or protecting device for brick chimneys, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for brick chimneys to prevent the spreading or displacement of the bricks due to heating thereof, said protector consisting essentially of a skeleton plate adapted to be arranged between contiguous courses of the brickwork and provided at its outer edge with ears designed to bear against the outer surfaces of the bricks in said contiguous courses.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of collars or protectors embodying my invention applied in the operative position to a chimney. Fig. 2 is apartial vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the collars.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The device embodying my invention consists, essentially, of a skeleton plate 1 corresponding in plan with the cross-section of the chimney to which it is to be applied and adapted to be arranged between contiguous courses 2 and 3 of brickwork, and integral with said plate and at the outer edge thereof is formed aseries of alternatelyarranged upwardly and downwardly extending ears at and 5 bearing against the outer surfaces, respectively, of the bricks in the courses 2 and 3.
In the drawings I have shown the protecting-collar arranged in every other joint between the courses, inasmuch as Ihave found this arrangement efficient in preventing the spreading or displacement of the members of the brickwork, andin addition thereto I have arranged a cap 6 upon the upper or cap course and provided it with downturned ears 7, which bear against the outer surfaces of the bricks'in said uppermost course.
By arranging a collar or protector of the construction specified in those courses which are arranged within the woodwork of the building to which the chimney is applied the displacement of the bricks and the consequent communication of heat and fire to the frame of the building will be prevented, the bursting or spreading of chimneys, both of dwelling-houses and factories, usually resulting from the expansion of the inner sides or surfaces of the bricks due to the internal heat, the outer sides thereof being less affected.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A collar or protector for brick chimneys consisting of a skeleton plate adapted to be arranged between contiguous courses of brickwork and provided at its outer edge with alternatelyarranged upwardly and downwardly turned perpendicular ears adapted to bear against the outer surfaces, respectively, of the bricks in said contiguous courses, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN HENSHAIV.
