IMPROVEMENT IN GUARDS FOR PREVENTING LEAKAGE AROUND CHIMNEYS.

To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, JosErnUs F. Senor- LER, of Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and in the State of Ohio, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Chimneys; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a way whereby a chimney may be so constructed as to allow it to settle without danger of being separated at or near the roof, and at the same time be supported at the roof, and the roof be made water-tight around the chimney.

Experience has taught that a large per centage of fires originates in defective chimneys, and these chimneys are made defective by sliding on the roof when they settle, thus separating at or near the roofsuiiiciently to allow burning soot, sparks, and even flames to pass through the opening. This invention is to prevent this source of tire.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of two caps, made of galvanized iron or other suitable material, plain or ornamented, as desired, and of staples attached to the sides of the chimney,

as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a house with chimney having my invention attached thereto, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged Vertical section of the chimney and part of the roof.

A represents the chimney, and B the roof of the house, through which the chimney passes. The lower or roof cap is made in two parts, 0 and D, and made to suit the pitch of the roof. The funnel O of the roof-cap is made at least one inch larger in length and breadth than the size of the chimney, the top being horizontal, and three or more inches above the peak of the root. The flange D of the roof-cap should be three or more inches wide, turned up on its inner margin, and the funnel part 0 then slipped over and soldered.

The roof being shingled or covered, the roofcap is put in position when the chimney is built through the roof, and is located so as to be free from contact with the chimney, and then nailed fast.

The upper cap or chimney-cap G is constructed sufficiently large to slip over the funnel O of the roof-cap, and with sides three or more inches wide, and having flanges at least one inch wide, bent inward at right angles to the faces, forming a part to rest on the outer margin of a layer of brick. This cap is put in posit-ion, resting on a layer of brick, the top of which is from. one to two inches above the funnel of the root cap. By this arrangement, when the chimney settles, the upper cap G slides down over the lower cap 0 D, offering no obstruction to the settling, and making the chimney water-proof.

If the roof is shingled or covered after the chimney is built, the roof-cap can be applied by soldering the parts after they are in posiion around the chimney.

In chimneys whose base is low down in the building, and those bar ing a high and heavy top, it will be advisable to support them at the roof.

A staple, a, is made of light bar-iron, the points about one inch long, and the cross-bar four and a half inch es, so as to allow it to straddle two layers of brick. One of these staples is placed in each face of the chimney, where it passes through the roof, the points entering between the layers of brick, and the cross-bar parallel with the face of the chimney, and against theroof-boards.

These staples will not interfere with the settling of the chimney, and will hold it as firmly as in the usual way of shingling close to the chimney.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
