DANIEL W. MILLSAPS, OF ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
SHIN GLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed March 30, 1915. Serial No. 18,135.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. MILLSAPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albemarle, in the county of Stanly and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shingles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to roof coverings and has special reference to a tile, preferably metallic, provided with ventilating openings which are so arranged as to prevent entry of rain water into the building covered.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved form of ventilating tile especially adapted for the purpose specified.
The invention consists in general of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roof whereon the tiles of the present invention are used.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through such a roof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the tiles.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through such a tile.
In the present embodiment of the invention I disclose a tile constructed of metal of which I form a body portion 10 having an opening 11 adjacent the end 12 which is intended to lie uppermost on the slope of the roof when the tile is in position.
Over the opening 11 extends a housing which consists of a metallic plate comprising a top 13, a closed upper end 14:, and closed sides 15, the tile having an opening 16 at the lower end of the housing which is protected by a lip 17 extending downward from the lower end of the top 13. The
body portion has the metal adjacent the lower edge of the opening 11 struck up and concavely curved toward the opening 16 to form a baffle 18 the top of which is in spaced relation to the top 13 of the housing.
When these tile are used the direction of the air currents can be clearly seen by noting the arrows in Fig. 2.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the tile described without departing from the principles specified. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A tile comprising a body portion having an opening adjacent its upper end and having a housing extending over the opening, said housing being closed at its upper end and sides and open at its lower end, and a baflie extending upward from the body between the openings and terminating short of the housing.
2. A tile comprising a body portion having an opening adjacent its upper end and having a housing extending over the opening, said housing being closed at its upper end and sides and open at its lower end, and a baiile extending upward from the body between the openings and terminating short of the housing, said baiile being concavely curved in the direction of the opening in the housing, means to protect the opening in the housing, said means comprising a lip extending downwardly from the lower edge of the top of said housing.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL W. MILLSAPS.
Witnesses:
J. H. SNOTHERLY, T. R. FORREST.
