Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 14, 1910. Serial No. 592,378.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TEMME, citizen of the United States, residing at New Kensington, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conductors or Drain-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in conductors or drain pipes, and has for its main object to provide a means for preventing conductors and drain pipes from freezing in winter.
Anotherpbject of the invention is to provide a combined means for preventing a conductor or drain pipe from becoming choked up with foreign matter, such as leaves, etc., which gathers in the ordinary drain.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved drain pipe, I will explain the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view of my device showing its application. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, 1 indicates a roof of a house, 2 the gutter-ing attached and 3 a conductor or drain pipe leading from the gutter to the ground or sewer. The drain pipe 3 is attached to the side of a house in a vertical position in the ordinary manner and is provided with an opening 4 at the upper end thereof into which is inserted a strainer 6, which consists of a cage formed of a number of spring arms 5 secured at their upper ends to a stifiening member or ring 7. The strainer is held in the opening 4 of the conductor 3 by the lower or free ends 8 of the spring arms 5 which fit within the same. A ventilating pipe 9 is placed through the ring 7 and extends downward within the pipe 1 a short distance below the opening 4: thereof, and such pipe is necessarily of smaller size than the pipe 1, and when held in position and supported by meansof the ring 7 and spring arms 5 of the strainer 6, provides for the passage of the water into the pipe 1 from the drain or gutter of the house around the sides of said ventilating pipe. The distance the ventilating pipe 9 extends into the drain pipe 1 is very small, and is only so placed to allow for ventilation around the entrance of said drain pipe to prevent the same from becoming closed up by any foreign substance, such as leaves, etc., which might gather within the opening 4 thereof. The upper end 11 of the pipe 9 is intended to extend above any possible snow line so that the opening 12 of the pipe will always be free and open to the air.
A shield 13 is secured to the mouth of the pipe 9, and a cap 14 is placed over the mouth thereof by means of arms 15 extending upward therefrom.
When the upper entrance to a conductor or drain pipe is closed by snow, the snow and water entering into the drain pipe will quickly freeze and choke up the pipe, while foreign matter, such as leaves, coming in contact with the top of the drain pipe will choke the same and prevent it from carrying away the drain water from the roof.
The use of my improved conductor is as follows :VVhen the drain and ventilating pipes have been placed in position such as shown and described, there will be a constant draft passing through the conductor or drain pipe which cannot in any way become out ofi? so that this constant draft of air through the ventilating pipe and into the drain pipe will prevent any choking of the pipe by freezing of water or snow therein. The strainer which acts as a means for supporting the ventilating pipe will also prevent any. foreign matter from entering the conductor or drain pipe.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a ventilating attachment comprising a pipe, and a cage composed of wires which at one end carry a stiffening member and support the pipe and the other ends of which are adapted to be attached to a drain pipe.
2. In combination with a drain pipe having an opening in the top of the some, a ventilating pipe extending into said opening and terminating short of the bottom of said drain pipe and having an opening in the lower end of the some for supplying air to said drain pipe, and a cage mounted on the drain pipe and comprising wires the upper ends of which surround a stifiening member and support the Ventilating pipe.
