E OR SCUPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1 8. 1 5P I 1i. 1913. serial. No. 769,549.
To lll whom If may concern Be it known that I, Geenen XV. Sor-looms, a citizen of the United St'ates,.and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York` and State of New York, have invented eertain new andY useful Improvements in Tater-Escapes or Scuppers, of which the following` is a specification. 'K
In installing Wateueseapes or seuppors 1n the walls of buildingn` when the latter are being erected, there is danger that the mortar, plaster and the like will-fall upon the outer enls`of the seuppers and interfere with the proper working of the, water delivery valves, and it is the object, ot' my invention to provide an improved water-eseape or seupper havingr means to prevent injury to or clogging ol the escape valve, from the causes stated, and to improve the general constrl'letion of such deviee, whereby rehe tively large volumes ot water may be auto.A Inatically delivered therethrough trom the room with expedition.
In Carrying out. in v invention l provide a Water-eseape or :u| per comprising a hot 10W Casing ada :ted to be titled in the wall of the building with its inner end adjarent t0 the floor of a room, and provided with a valve at or adjacent to the, outlet end pi\fot ally supported aty its upper part to beopened by the tlow oli water through the deviee,
With a hood secured over the hinge. ot` the" valve and above the latter to pretee-t the sante from falling obieets und the elena-nts. In my improved l'orm olI \vater-ese:d e or seupper l provide the inner end thereot' with itinl face adapted to be flush with the inner wall ol' a building1 and with ther-bot tom of the deviee inetined with respedt' to such t'aee, so that when set in the wall ot the building there will be a eonsiderable out'' Ward inclination to eause, the. i'ree low ot' Vater theret'rom, while at the same time the inner i'aee, ot the easing will be flush with the wall or surbase ol' the building so as not to interl'ere with the use ot the room.
Further details ol my invention will be hereinafter set; forth and then pointed out in the Claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein, Figure 1 is a partly broken plan vien7 of a water-eseape 0r scupper embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2, 2,
in Fig. l, showing the water-escape or seapper in position in the wall ol1 a building: Fig. 3 is an end view disclosing the valve and its hood, and Fig. t is` a view looking from the lel't in Fig.
My improved water-eseape or seupper comprises a hollow eaning 1 of .su-,itahle dimensions, whieh may be oli metal or eon- Crete` atl the outer or water deliverv end otl whieh is located a valve 2, shown pivot ily supported at its upper end to rest at the outer end oll the casing. Said valve is shown provided with earnil pivotally supported by pin 4- upon ears ."3 upon the easing, and the valve is shown resting` upon the end edges oi' the easing, the bottom wall ot whieh extends; beyond itsI upper wall, whereby the valve is maintained in a position inelining outwardly and downwardly respecting the wall G olI the lniilding. At 7 is a hood titled upon easing 1 and extending outwardly there trom above and over valve 3, said hood thereinr extending beyond the wall G of the gbmldmg, and being shown provided with beneath said hood.
The top of hood 7 is shown 'ijnftlined downwardly on opposite .somewhat in* the nature of'aportion of a pvramid or peaked roof, having a tendency l to shed the wat-e' as well as lnortar or the like thaty may drop upon the saine when the I iiuilding is being erected.
'lhe inner portion of easing 1 is Shown tlaring inwardly toward the inner part ot the. buihling, and the inner end thereof opens into thel roo'ni through wall t3. At the inner end of the easing is a protecting plate, shown in the form ot a screen or grid 10, fitted against the inner edges` of the easing and shown secured thereto by a bolt or s ,reW .ll passing through said screen or grid and entering a lug 12 on the upper part of the easing. The inner edges et casing l are shown disposed in an angular direction to the bottom and top Walls of the casing, so that the Screen or grid l0 may tvagainst said angular edges in a vert-ical position along the inner face of the Wall, lwhereby ment being sneh that valve 2 is free to lift;-
sides in several directions from the peak 7,
the casing may be inclined-downwardly and outwardly in the wall, as in Fig.Y 2.
ln installino` my improved water escape or scupper in t 1e wall of a building the wall is .shaped with a downwardly inclined part GH upon which the water-escape or scupper is rested, the screen or grid 10 being fitted along the inner face of the wall, so that the upper surface of the bottom of the waterescape and the lower edges of the openingsl in the screen or grid will come substantially 'A ter is being built, and protect. the valve and its hinge from cement, mortar and the like that is liable to drop, since the latter would fall upon the hood and n ot accumulate upon the valve and hinge, andv thereby the valve is left 'free to be opened automatically by water flowing through the casing from the room. This Vovercomes the ditliculty found in installing this` class of devices in build ings where the workmen allow cement and the like to drop upon the valve and its hinge of such devices, and do not remove the same,
. thereby preventing the free use of the valve.
. olieniug, and
The hood also protects the valve hinge from the .elements and keeps it in good working condition. By having the inner portion ot the easing flaring toward the room and leading' thri'iugh the Wall at the tloor, a relatively large amount of water may be accumulated to pass into the neck or outer portion ot' the casing to have the etlcct of increasing the volume of water against the valve to cause its free and ready thereby tending to assist the tree [low of water from the floor of the building.
Whilel l have set forth the hood 7 as secured to the easing and the wall built over the inner portion of said hood, it will be understood that the hood may be built directly into the wall without regard -to being fastened to said caSinO.
Having now described my invention what I claim is l. 'A water-escape comprising a hollow casing having a valve at one end thereof and provided withl a hood overlying the valve to protect Vthe saine from matter dropping from above.
s. A water-escape comprising a casing 'ot New York, and State of New York,
having a valve at its outer end hinged upon the casing at the upper portion. ot the valve, said casing having a hood above the hinge and projecting outwardly thereover.
3. A water-escape comprising a hollow casing having a valve atone end thereof and provided with a hood overlyin the valve to protect the same from matter lropping from above, said hood. having an upper surface inclining downwardly and outwardly.
4. A water-escape comprising a hollow casing'having a valve at one end thereqf' and provided with a hood overlying the valve to protect the same from matter dropping from .above, rsaid hood having an up per surface inelining downwardly and outwardly from a central point'. in opposite directions.
5. A water-escape comprising a casing having a valve hinged at the outer end thereo't, and a hood'above the hinge extending outwardly over the same and having Side webs inclosing the hinge.
6. A water-escape comprising a easing having ak valve hinged at the outer end thereof, and a screen at its inner end, the bottom of the easing extending at an angle to the plane of said screen.
7. A water-escape comprising a hollow easing having a flaring inner portion and a reduced outer portion communicating therewith, a valve hinged to the casing at the outer end of its reduced portion, and a screen at the inner end of the flaring portion. Y d v. p
8. The combination of a wall, with aV water escape comprising a hollow casing fitted within and opening through opposite sides of the wall, said casing having a valve hinged at the outer end, and a hood located over said hinge to protect the same from matter dropping from above. Y
9. The combination of a wall Aand a floor adjacent thereto, with a'water escape comprising a hollow casing fitted within and. opening at one end through the outer face of said wall, said yeasing having a valve hinged at the outer end, the inner end of said casing opening through the inner face of said Wall, and th' bottom at the inner end of said casing being substantially on'a level with said floor, and a hood located over said hinge to protect the same from matter dropping from above.
Signed at New York city, in the county this 8th day of May D. 1913.
