Description

(Nomodel.)
P. SCHUELER.
GUT-OFF.
Patented Sept. l, 1885.
UNITED STATES FREDERICK SCHUELER', OF LA SALLE, ILLINOIS.
CUT-OFF..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,449, dated September 1, 1885.
Application tiled August 6, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SCHUELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Salle, in the county of La Salle and State ,of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cut-0ffs, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a cut-off for controlling the direction of water, and it has for its object to provide a device by which the position of the valve or cutoff may be determined from the position occupied by its handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a thoroughly water-tight valve and one that will be held in position by its own weight.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutoff which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and durable in its use.
`NVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improyed construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cutoff constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, rand Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the shell or casing, which, as shown, is semicircular in form. Upon the upper side of this casing A is provided a hole or opening, B, which is provided with an annular tlange forming a mouth-piece, C. Near each end of the casing, upon the lower side thereof, are provided holes or openings b,which, like the opening` B, are each provided with an annu lar flange to form month-pieces D and E.
Extending upwardly inside the casing, between the two holes or openings, is a partition, F, which extends upwardly a short distance, and connects the two side walls of the shell or casing. The upper end of said partition is rounded, as shown.
G represents the cut-off, which is hollowed (No modell cave, the curvature commencing from the upper end= H represents flanges which are secured to the ends of the cutoff or valve, said flanges being quadrantal in form, and so arranged that when the valve is operated to close either of the openings D or E one of the ends of both of said iianges will rest upon the iioor of the shell or casing and prevent further movement of the valve.
I represents a slot or opening formed upon the side of the shell or casing. This slot or opening is closed by one of the flanges H, and secured to said flange and extending through said slot is a iingenpiece, J, for operating the valve.
In operation, supposing the valve to be in the position shown in Fig. l, to turn the cut-off or valve, the finger-piece is moved to the opposite end of the slot, which changes the iiow of water from the pipe D to the pipe E. The valve will be held in place against any movement by its own weight.
Itl will be seen from the above description that a cut-off constructed in accordance with my invention is simple, maybe manufactured and supplied at aslight cost, and its operation is thoroughly effective, and that it is strong and durable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The semicirculanshaped casing A, having a flat base, and inlet and outlet openings connecting with the latter at each end, in combination with the partit-ion F, extending upward from the base of the casing between the openings, the valve or cut-off G, turning on a bearing at the upper end of the latter, and having its upper end working against the curved inner face of the casing, quadrantalshaped iianges II, secured to and projecting from each side ofthe cut-off or valve, a slot, I, in one side of the casing, and a hoger-piece, J, working through the slot and connected ICO to the Valve, the said anges covering the my own I have hereunto affixed my signature slot and adapted to abut at their ends against in presence of two Witnesses. the Hoor or base of the casing over either the inlet or out-let openings, so as'to limit the FREDERICK SCHUELER" 5 movement of the valve, for the purpose set Vitnesses:
forth. HENRY ZIMMERMAN,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as THOM SHARP.
