Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES SHAW, OF-HENRY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAIN-WATER CUT-OFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patentr No. 155,761, dated October 6, 1874; application filed September 1, 1874. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLESA SHAW, of Henry, in the county of Marshall and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rain-Water Cut-Offs 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings, and to the. letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a rainwater cut-oif, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whichv Figure 1 is afront view of my invention, and Fig. 2 :is a vertical section of the same.
A represents the end of an ordinary rainwater pipe, and B is the pipe leading into the l cistern. The end of the pipe A is formed or provided with lips C C on opposite sides. To
within the same, and allow of the pipe D bei ing turned at about an angle of forty-five degrees, with either end downward. The pipe l) is at each end provided with a spout, G, as 011e of these spouts is so arranged that when that end of the pipe Dis turned down said spout will enter the upper end of the cistern-pipe B, and the other spout, When that end is turned down, will connect with a waste-pipe, or let the .water pass ont on the ground. p
The rst water that comes off the roof should be allowed to pass ott' until it gets clear; then the pipe D is simply turned on its pivot, and the water will then pass into the cistern. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
rIhe combination, with the rain-water pipe A and cistern-pipe B, of the lips or Wings C C, attached to the pipe A, and the pivoted pipe D, provided with a spout, G, at each end, suhstantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
CHARLES SHAW. Witnesses:
WALTER SCOTT, WM. E. CLARK.
