Description

UNITED STATES I PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM HENRY LILLEY, OF HANNIBAL, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER CUT-OFFS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY LIL- LEY, of Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in a Water Out-Off; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a vertical central section of my invention.
This invention has relation to water-spouts for conducting rain-water from the house-top to a cistern, or other similar purposes. The novelty consists in the construction and novel arrangement of an adjustable sliding cut-015", by means of which the first flow of water is directed off from the cistern as and for the purposehereinafter specified.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a section of water-spout, to which are attached the extensions leading from the house-top and to the cistern. The upper half of the section A is constructed with an inner casing, B, between which and the outer casing slides a tube, 0, having hinged to its lower end an elbow, D,
' which, when used as a cut-off, passes through an oval aperture, E, cut in one side of the section A, as shown. The end of said elbow, which is hinged to the tube 0, is of the same diameter. The lower end of the tube 0, as will be seen, is contracted so as to fit said elbow and form a watervtight joint. The first flow of water from the roof during a fall of rain is not pure or clean. Hence, to prevent it from passing into the cistern the elbow is arranged as shown. The water then passes ofl through said elbow.
When it is wished to pass the water into the cistern the elbow is raised up and attached to the casing A by means of a hook and loop, a a. The tube 0 must be previously moved down until the opening E is closed.
F represents a self-locking spring-latch, which enters a notch at the lower end of the opening E.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The improved cut-ofi', consisting of the sliding tube G and hinged elbow D, applied to the section of spout A having the inner casing B aperture 'E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The hook a, eye a, and latch F, in combination with the hinged elbow D, sliding tube 0, and spout-section A, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY LILLEY.
