NITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
HENRY MYERS, JR., 0E MGLEAN, ILLINOIS.
IMISROVEMENT IN CUT-OFFS FOR WATER-CONDUCTO-RS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,977 dated June 13, 1871.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY MYERS, Jr., of McLean, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable `Improvement in Water-Conductors; 'and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is my invention in plan view. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
My invention relates to cut-offs for cisterns, and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices intended to serve as a valuable and efficient apparatus for changing the direction of the How of water through the cistern-pipe.
A represents the outside case or pipe, made somewhat larger in diameter than the supplypipe F, with which it is connected by tapering `ends b b. This enlargement is designed to give room for the inner funnel without obstruotin g in the least the ow of water. Within the case A, and at its upper end, is fastened a tube, B, gradually contracting or tapering toward its lower end f, which is designed to correspond in size with the main supply-pipe F, and to it within the end of the spout D when the latter is thrown into connection. In the pipe A is out ont an opening, d, and in lthis opening I arrange an elbow-spout or chute, D, by hinging it tothe pipe at e, above the elbow and in the bendk thereof. By means of the hinge the elbow is rendered capable of being spout is turned up in its position, with the hook' q secured into the eye hf, it closes the elliptical opening in the side of the pipe and allows the free passage of the water down to the cistern. When the spout is turned inward its inner end encircles the lower end of the inner tube B, and thus form atight joint therewith, and cuts off the iiow of water down the pipe, and carries it through the spout D into the yard or waste-reservoir. v
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The combination, with the expanded section A, provided with the tapering guide-tube B and the elliptical opening d, of the tubular elbow-spout D, hinged at-the top of the opening d, and beveled at its inner end, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the, presence of two witnesses.
HENRY MYERS, JR.
