WINDOWZSILL CONSTRUCTION AND TILE TI-IEREFOR.
To ZZ fte/1,0m 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Emorr E. NIonsoN, a resident of Philadelphia, ldiiladelphia county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Sill Constructions and Tiles Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section through a window sill embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the sill tiles removed.
My invention has relation to window sill constructions for buildings, and tiles therefor, and is designed to provide a construction and tile especially adapted for use in buildings constructed of hollow tiles.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof, and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates a tile wall, below a window opening, which is shown as having a covering or casing 3 of stucco or concrete covering its outer surface and also covering the floor of the window opening. Seated on this floor is a hollow sill-forming tile 4, which has a horizontal bottom face and a slopino' upper face 5, so that the cross section of the tile decreases in a vertical direction from its inner to its outer edge. The surface ot the tile preferably provided with the dove-tailed bonding projections or ribs (i. The stucco or concrete layer 3 is extended upwardly around the tile 4L, as shown at 7, so that the tile is practically embedded in the concrete or stucco. The upper surface o'f `the tile is formed with the vertical shoulder or offset 8 at which the top layer of concrete terminates.
Specification oi' Letters Patent.
Application filed August 29, 1912.
Patented Sept. 2, .1913.
Serial No. 717,716.
9 and 10 designate the usual window framing, the member 9 overlapping the top layer of concrete or stucco. Ill is a trailsverse anchoring strip engaging the member 9 and embedded in the concrete or stucco. The top layer of concrete or stucco, together with this anchoring strip, forms an eflicient weather guard to prevent the entrance oif water underneath the member f). The tile l may consist; of a single section, but preferably is composed oil a plurality of relatively short sections, such as shown at Fig. 2, placed end to end.
My invention provides a simple and ellicient sill construction for buildings, which obviates the use of the solid slabs commonly employed and renders the construction much cheaper. It also :forms an etlicient protection against the entrance of water beneath the window framing.
Vhat I claim is:
l. A window sill forming tile, having a horizontal lower side or base, and its upper surface :formed with two dowlnvardly Aand outwardly sloping portions at different levels united by a substantially vertical shoulder or offset which is much nearer one end of the tile than the other, substantially as described.
2. A window sill construction for buildings, comprising an upper sill member having a downwardly and outwardly sloping bottom surface, a sill-'forming tile extending underneath said men'lber, the upper sur 'face of the tile having two donumfardly and outwardly sloping portions united by a substantially vertical shoulder located beneath the upper member, a layer of plastic material covering the upper surface of the tile up to said shoulder, and a combined anchoring and weather-guard strip inset into the upper member and into the plastic covering adjacent to said shoulder, substantially as described.
3. A window sill construction, comprising a sill-forming tile, having its upper surface 'formed by two downwardly and outwardly sloping portions united by a substantially vertical shoulder, the lower one of said inclined portions being covered up In testimony whereof, I huye l/iereunto set to the said shoulder by a layer of plastic my hand.
material, and an upper sill member extends ELIOTT E. NICKSON.
ing over the upper portion of the tile and to Witnesses: a point beyond said shoulder, substantially HOWARD H. PARKER,
as described. WM. MoRToN WEST.
