FOOTING FOR GELLAR WALLS. APPLICATION man MAR. 2o. 1922.

Patented Sept. 26? i922.

CHARLES F. WEICHOLD, OF WORTHINGTON, OHIO.

FOOTI'NG FOR GELLAR WALLS.

Application led March 20, 1922. Serial No. 544,993.

T 0 all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that l, CHARLES F. llnioHoLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at FVorthington, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in F ootings for Cellar `Walls, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a. footing for a cellar wall constructed to rapidly draw off accumulating water 'so that the wall and cellar shall be kept normally dry and sanitary.

The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.

ln the accompanying drawing- Figure l is a plan view of a footing for a rectangular structure according to my invention. l

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the footing at the line H--H Fig. l looking to the right and showing thereon a portion of wall built up from the footing.

Fig. 3 is a side view partly 'in section of two footing blocks showing a detail of their construction.

Fig. lis a perspective view of one of the footing blocks.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of a protecting gas-- 1et for the top of the footing block.

In carrying out the invention the footing is preferably formed of concrete blocks each having its upper surface provided with a like and similarly `located longitudinal channel or gutter 6 and one end with a vertical tongue 7, and the opposite end with a groove 8, the tongue of one block fitting in the groove of the'next block so as to prevent lateral displacement and insure proper alinement of the blocks and the grooves at the top, The corner blockc at 8a are also provided with a channel at its upper surface and with tongues and grooves in their ends so that'there shall be a continuity of the channel or gutter all the way around the top of the footing. The channels and the tongues may be of any form in cross section suitable for the purpose. The lower portion of the block may be made hollow to reduce the weight.

Before laying the first course of the wall to be superposed on the footing the upper surface of the footing is covered with a gasket l0 of thick asbestos, tar or other paper perforated along the line of the channel as shown at 1l, so that workmen may not carelessly leave mortar or other material in the gutter and thereby prevent the free flow of water therethrough. The wall superposed on the footing may be hollow concrete blocks, brick7 tile or other suitable construction. Where the superposed wall is composed of hollow concrete blocks the water seeping into the wall drains down to the gutter and where it is `of ordinary brick it seeps through crevises inevitably left by the brick layer in laying the same.

One of the blocks of they footing is provided with a lateral passage leading from the channel in which may be inserted a short piece of iron pipe 9 with a downwardly turned elbow at itsv outer end for the purpose of discharging the collected water onto the cellar floor and thence to the usual drain l2.

The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.

lVhat I claim is:

1. A footing for a wall having a substantially horizontally extending water collecting` channel in its top and an outlet for the collected water. f

2. A footing for a wall composed of a course of blocks having a substantially hori- Zontally extending water collecting channel in its top and an outlet for the collected water.

3. A block for a wall footing provided with a water collecting channel in its top, a tongue on one end and a groove on the other end, substantially as described.

4. A hollow wall having a footing provided with a substantially horizontally eX- tending channel and ra discharging outlet from said channel to the exterior of the wall.

CHARLES F. VVEICHOLD.
