FLOOR DRAIN".
Application filed February 10, 1922.
To all 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH C. SANDERS a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain 5 new and useful Improvement in Floor Drains, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others, skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drains of the kind that are used for carrying surface water off a floor, andparticularly, drains that are adapted to be set in floors constructed of concrete or similar material that is molded around the drain.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable floor drain that is equipped with an efficient means for producing a tight joint between the drain and a water-proof ing element that is arranged between the foundation layer of the fioor and the finishing coat or top layer of the floor.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sectional view of a floor drain constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view of a portion of the laterally-projecting flange on the sleeve of the drain, illustrating the scoriated surface on the top side of said flange.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention. A designates the head piece of my improved drain and B designates a sleeve that carries said head piece and which is provided at its lower end with an internally screw-threaded portion 1 into which a drain pipe (not shown) is adapted to be screwed, the head piece A being funnel-shaped in general outline and provided at its lower end with an externally screw-threaded portion 2 that is screwed into the upper end of the sleeve B. thereby enabling the head of the drain to be set so that the upper edge of same will be flush with the top surface of the finished floor.
In order that the water proofing element G that is generally arranged betweenthe foundation layer m and the finishing coat or top layer y of the fioor may be securely connected to the drain in such a way as to eliminate the possibility of a leak developing at the point where the drain passes through said water proofing element, I have provided the sleeve B of the drain with a laterally-projecting flange D equipped in its top face with an undercut groove 3 into Serial No. 535,595.
formed preferably by rows of rectangular shaped, tapered projections 4:, spaced apart and arranged so that the projections of one row alternate with the projections of an adjacent row, as shown in Figure 2.
In installing the drain the collar B with the head A mounted therein is first arranged in the proper position and the material that forms the foundation layer so of the floor is then molded around said collar and around the peripheral edge of the horizontallydisposed flange D thereon.
The water proofing element C, which may consist of various kinds of substances or materials, is then arranged upon a foundation layer 00, and the edge portion of said water proofing element is pressed downwardly into the undercut groove 3 in the top side of the flange D, as illustrated in Figure m1 of the drawing. Thereafter, the groove 3 is filled with a self-hardening, plastic substance, so as to securely lock the downturned edge'of the water proofing element C and form a water-tight joint between same connected to the drain in such a manner that I it is impossible for seepage which collects on said water proofing element to leak through the joint where the'water proofing element is connected to the drain.
receive the edge portion of a Water proofing element embedded inthe floor and also a locking key formed of a self-hardening substance, the exterior of the head of the drain and the top and bottom faces of said flange being scoriated, for the purpose described.
' JOSEPH C. SANDERS.
