IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATING ILLUMINATING ROOFING-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,186. dated December 2, 15773; application filed November 11, 1J3.
CASE 3 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEI'S llrzrr'r, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Ventilating Illuminating Roofing-Plates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing makin a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower side of a section of my improved roofing. Fig. 2 is a like view of the upper side of the same; and Figs. 3 and I are cross-sections upon lines as m and z 2, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable lire proof illuminating-roofs to be made ventilatmg when desired; and it consists in an illir minating ventilating-roof composed of perforated metal plates overlaid with glass, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent a series of beams or rafters arranged in parallel lines, and provided, within the vertical face of each, with two grooves, a and a, that extend longitudinally along or within the same.
' Attached to or upon the lower sides of the rat ters are plates of sheet metal B and B, which may be plane or corrugated, as desired, and are each perforated, as shown, so as to permit light and air to pass freely through the same. Within each of the grooves a and a is placed a glass plate, 0, the ends of which are preferably bound with sheet metal, and said plate arranged to slide longitrulinally, so as to uncover, when desired, a portion of the perforated plate beneath. The upper end of the glass plate 0, within the upper grooves a, is contained within a suitable groove formed in the ridge-beam 1), when in the position shown in Fig. 2, while its lower end is provided with a dependent flange, c, that nearly touches the upper face of the glass 0 within the lower grooves, and substantially closes the space between said glass, and prevents the admission of air thereto. A further protection is afforded by means of a flange, c, which extends upward from the upper end of the lower glass, and effectually prevents the upward and iiiward passage of such water or dirt as may pass the flange c. As thus arranged, the upper glass may be moved downward, so as to uncover the perforated plate immediately beneath or near the ridge, while the lower glass is capable of being moved upward, so as to uncover said perforated plate at a lower point or near the eaves, the adjustment thus afforded enabling the space beneath the roofing to be placed in communication with the external air I at any desired point.
I11 the event of a fire in the vicinity of a building covered with this roofing, burning brands would be caught upon the perforated metal plates, and thus prevented from entering the building, should any of the glazed openings be uncovered, while, in case of the breakage of one of the glass plates, none of the pieces having a sufficient size to cause injury would be permitted to fall within the building.
A roof constructed in this manner is fire and weatherproof, durable, and not expensive, and at the same time affords all necessary light and ventilation for the upper portion of 'the building.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s An illuminating ventilating-roof composed of perforated sheets of metal overlaid with glass, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
