Description

UNITED STATES GEoEGE HAYES, oF NEW-YORK, N. Y.
VENTILATOR- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 94,203, dated August 31, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAYES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilation; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
This invention'relates to a new and improved method of constructing and arranging Vventilators on dwelling houses and other buildings, railway-cars, and steamboats; and consists of a metallic ridge so constructed as to admit of an ingress of pure air, which, coming in contact with the impure air of the building, car, or boat, is driven into an upper cavity, which, being provided with perforations, gives the egress. The whole is arranged so that all leakage is avoided.
The same can be used as aventilator in conjunction with my patent skylight, (dated March 9, 1869, No. 87,668,) or over a shaft, whether round, square, or polygo'nal, and can be used as a chimney-top byleaving oli' the cap and grating, which will cure smoky chimneys.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical section and perspective view of my arrangement as applied to the peak of a roof covered with slates, showing the course of action, as indicated by arrows, the larger arrows indicating the course of impure air from the building, the horizontal arrows the ingress of pure air, which, coming in contact with the impure air, causes a circulation, and passes into the upper cavity, and escapes through the perforations in the under side of capping. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of Fig. 1. l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents rafters of building; B, ridge- A .boards C, blocking of ridge, as indicated by dotted lines; D, roof-planking; E, slating; F, metal ange which overlaps slating; G, frame, perforated at H, being ingress of pure air, protected from leakage by ilange F; I, drip-holes, through whichany water may escape that may have been driven in at perforations H; J, grating, perforated for passage of pure and impure air to upper cavity; K, slide, perforated to act with grating J, to open and close, as desired; L, cap covering the whole, the under side of which, being perforated at M, giving the egress. The slide K can be made to open or shut by means of pulley and cord, attached asrmay be required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The metallic flange F, the frame G, the grating J, the slide K, and the cap L, constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described, for the purposes set forth.
The foregoing specification signed by me this 8th day of July, 1869.
GEORGE HAYES.
