UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\YILLIAM ll. DRAKE, OF IIACKETTSTOXVN, NElV JERSEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,706, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed December 22, 1888. Serial No. 294,403. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM II. DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at I lackettstown, in the county of WVarren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Heating and Ventilating Houses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for heating and ventilating houses; and it consists in the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of the invention, showing its application. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the upper damper closed and the heated air escaping into the upper compartment or story of the house; and Fig. 3, a detail perspective view, parts being broken away, of the damper-section.
To illustrate the operation-of my invention it will be shown and described in its application to a house of two stories. However, it can be applied to houses having three or more stories by the addition of extra lengths of pipe and by providing a damper-section for each story.
The invention comprises an inner pipe A and an outer pipe or casing B, each being composed of a series of lengths of short pipes, which are held together at their ends in any well-known manner. The inner pipe A is somewhat less in diameter than the outer pipe or casing to leave an annular space C be tween them, and forms the smoke-pipe, the stove-pipe (not shown) communicating therewith through the lateral branch pipe D, which extends across the space 0 and through the side of the pipe or casing B. The dampersections, one being provided for each story, are similarly constructed and are each composed of an inner tubular section E, which corresponds in size with and forms a continuation of the inner pipe A, an outer tubular section F, a perforated diaphragm G, extending across the space between the two tubular sections, and a corresponding perforated damper II, for opening or closing the perforations in the diaphragm G and the damperl. The tubular section F flares outwardly to form the cone-section f just below the diaphragm G, which cone-section is perforated and is closed at its lower end by the horizontal annulus f.
The damper I is placed on the cone-section f and is correspondingly perforated. The damper H is operated by the handle h, which extends through an opening in the side of the tubular section F.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The products of combustion entering the pipe A through the lateral pipe D will in their passage through the said pipe A warm the air in the space 0. If the damper H G in the upper damper-section be closed and the corresponding damper I f opened, and the dampers in the lower damper-section opened, air willenter the space 0 through the said lower damper-section, and will be heated in its passage through th esaid space and escape th rough the upper damper-section and warm the said upper story. By opening the dampers in the upper damper-section the heavy vitiated air near the floor of the said upper and lower story will be drawn into the space 0 and escape into the air at the top of the pipes.
The top of the pipes A and B is protected by the hood or cap J to exclude rain and snow. The shield K near the roof sheds water. The perforations Z just above the shield K admit air to the space 0 above the roof of the house to prevent top from cracking by too great contraction of outer pipe B and expansion of the inner pipe A when top is used as chimney-top in connection with brick or other chimney. The shield L turnsany water that may trickle down the pipe and prevents same from entering the said openings Z.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the inner pipeA and the outer pipe B, having the space 0 between their opposing sides, the outer pipe having a series of openings, of the damper placed on the said outer pipe for opening and ICO closing the said openings therein, the perforated diaphragm surrounding the inner pipe and extending across the said space 0, and arranged at a slightly higher level than the said openings in the outer pipe, and the damper for opening and closing the perforations in said diaphragm, substantially as and for the purpose described.
'2. The herein-described damper-section for the purpose described, composed of an inner and an outer tubular section having a space bet een them, the perforated diaphragm extended across the said space, the damper for closing the perforations in the said diaphragm, the outer tubular section having a perforated cone-section which is closed at its lower end, and a damper placed on the said cone-section, substantially as and for the purpose described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. DRAKE.
