Description

itin-iisd iates @sind (iliiyiiw.
Lette-rs Patent No. 94,462, dated August 31, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sam'e.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. COWL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of' New York, have invented a new and improved Ventilator for Windows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same,1'eference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
- `Figure 1 is au inside view ot' a portion of a window, to which my improved ventilator has been attached.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional View of the taken through the line xx, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved ventilator for the windows of buildings, railroad-cars, steamboats, die., which shall be so constructed as not to exclude the light while allowing the fresh' air to pass in freely, butin suoli a way as not to cause any unpleasant or injurious'draughts; and
It consists in the construction and combination of the various partsof the ventilator, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the sash of a window, in the ra-bbet of which, in which the glass pane is usually secured, is placed the vertical partoi the metallic i'ame B, which is secured in place 'by screws, screwing into the sash A.
lhe outer part of the ii'aine B inclines downward and outward, so as to leave an opening in the lower part of the iiame B, from four to eight inches wide, according to -the size of the said frame. V
In the front, and in the triangular side openings of same,
the frame B, are fitted and secured panes of glass, C,
so as to allow the light to pass through freely.
In the opening in the bottom of the frame B are detachably secured two nely-perforated plates, D
and E, one of which, D, is stationar'yg'and the other, E, slides upon it, so that by adjusting the position of the sliding plate E, the peiforations may be partially or wholly closed, to regulate the admission of air, as desired.
In the case of windows provided with outside blinds or shutters, the position of the ventilator may be reversed; that is to say, the inclined part of the ventilator may project inward and upward, the perforated plates being at the top of said ventilator.
But in the case of windows provided ,with inside vblinds or shutters, the inclined part of the frame vplate D, and sliding perforated plate E, with each other, said parts being constructed and connected with the window-sash, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. Projecting one end of a glass window-pane out- Ward or inward from the plane of the sash, for the purpose of obtaining an upward draught, substantially as herein shown and described.
The'above specication of my invention signed by me, this 5th day of August, 1869.
WM. H. COWL.
