TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that JOHN R. WIIARItY, of Moundsville, in the county of' Marshall, and'kState of West Virginia, have invented a new and improved Ventilator' and Window-Screen; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the. same, reference being had -to the accompanying drawings, forming partei this specification.
This invention relates to an improved ventilator and window-screen, and consists in afrume of wire netting, fitting beneath the outer and upper sash, and of a shutter having movable slats in front thereof, also beneath the said uppei sasl). In theacompcnying drawingsf Figure 1 is a front view of my improved ventilator and window-screen, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section thereof, at line :c x.
Similar ietters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
A. is the upper sash, and B the lower, shownopen in the drawings. I" is a wire or metal nettingset in the frame G, beneath the upper or outer sash A, wholly or partially filling up the space between said sash und window-sill, as maybe desired. f Secured to the `outside of said frame G, by thescrews gg, (which may be placed as shown in the drawings, or in the sides, or in any other convenient placc,) is the shutter C C. The upper part of the-*frame C being sloped to shed the-rain, andthe sides rabbeted to it the outer bead-D, the centre bead may, it will" be observed, be dispensed with. c c c are slats pivoted i-n the sides oi` frameC C', one end thereof being `conneeted by the metal bar e,w 1iieh, when operated by the lever F, opens or closes the ,slats simultaneously. The 1ever E wdrks through the slot .g in -frame G. Another anvd smaller screen may, ifl
desired, be employed, either by itself, or with the frame'G, beneath the' inner sash when open, the`spaee between the sides of screen-frame and the sash-frame being filled up byorie or more slats. This screen may be secured to the-frame bya bolt or other approximate means; p
By the use of this screen, mosquitoes, illes, and other insects will be kept out of a room when the window is hoisted, notwithstandinga light may be burning therein. It will also help to keep out burglars or other thieves, and enable the window to be left open when the house is quittcd for a time, with thel advantage of finding the room sweet and pure on the 'return of the inhabitants,
.As a useful'modification of the invention above described, the screen might be inserted in the'shuttcr, and
the latter provided with a groove in each side, so as to slid'e up and down a slat or bead fixed to the sides ofthe Window-frame, and ventilato either from the top or bottom of the window.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and des-ire togsecure by Letters Patent, isi-` 1. The combination ofthe wire screen and frame F Cr, shutters C C', and window-frame, as herein described. for the purpose specified.
2.` The'shutter C C', metalvbzir e, and lever E, substantially as described, when disposed without the lower part of a window-frame, substantially as above set forth and described.
3'. The said shutter C C', in combination with the slot g', in sereen-i`ramc G, substantially as above set forth und described. v l I 'JOHN R. WHARRY.
