Description
BENJAMIN J. WILLIAMS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLl/"ANML Letters .Patent No. 102,900, lated May 10, 1870.
IMPROVED BLIND, SCREEN, AND SHUTTER.
The Scheduie referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
` and operation ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of' this specification.l
Figure l is a front or inside view.
Figure 2 is a back or outside view. Figure 3 is atransverse sectional view, in detail, of Venetian blind, as indicated by the line a J1 of' fig. .1,
`showing method of operating the slats.
Like letters in the figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
lhisinvention relates to aVenelian blind and inside folding shutter, provided with a wire screen or screens; and consists in combiningr therewith certain devices l'or operating the slats,'as will` be hereafter explained.
lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describeits construetion and operation.
lhe Venetian blinds A and folding-slmtters `B are hinged together and hung to the frame C, as ordinaxily.
D are the wire screens, which are placed over* the slats on the outside or back of the blind, and are sccured to the framing thereof by pieces, a, suitably beaded and joined together around and over the edge oi' `the wire, being glued and .nailed with cleat nails to the Stiles and rails forming the frame oi' the blind, or in any suitable manner that will secure them wit-hout detracting from the finish ofthe blind.
E are the slats, which are arranged vertically to avoid the dust settling on them, being pivoted to the rail above, as ordinarily, and below to two sliding. bars c c.
These bars are attached to the lever d by pivots, the lever being attached to the center ot' the rail be.- tween the stiles by a pivotscrew,'e.
A piece, 7i, is .let in across the stiles a little. above the rail, forminga slot in which the lever works. rlhis piece and the piece'on the back of the blind form the sides between which the bars work.
`tical in its adaptation for the purpose.
This method oi' operating the slats intended to be a simplication of the devices patented for accomplishing the same thing, and is believed to be lnore pracflhe opening and closing of thcslats for regulating the admission ot' air and light being done as is obvious by working the lever laterally in the slot.
The bottom rails are provided with openings 0, to let the dust Vout that would otherwise accumulate thereon, and interfere with the bars sliding or working freely.
It, of course, will be understood that these blinds are to be constructed. and provided with the wire screens, according to the room or place designed to use them; as, for instance, in the windows of a bedroom they may be so constructed as to make the room private, and yet afford ventilation and light and exclude insects at the same time, or the panel shutters may be dispensed with anda full blind and screen used, 0r where full panel shutters are used in a hall and staircase window without blinds, the up ier panels of the lower section maybe left out and slats with screens substituted in lieu thereof, and so on.
.Ii desirable, for the purpose oi'` giving a clear and unobstructed view of thc street to thi.` person sitting at the window, the blinds of the lowerI section may be so hinged to the panel shutters on either side, as that they may bc swung open without opening the shutters, the person having the benefit of a window-screen with sash hoisted.
Having thus fully described my invtmiion,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The sliding bars c c and lever (I, as arranged and pivotcd to the rail for opera-ting the sltrl tion with a -Venetian blind and inside folding shutter, provided with )vire screens D and openings o, substantially as described.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing-as my invention, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the' presence ot two witnesses. t
