UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN LLOYD, OF RICH HILL, MISSOURI.
COMBINED STORM AND SCREEN DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,832, dated June 1, 1886.
Serial No. 195,437. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN LLOYD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rich Hill, county of Bates, and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Storm and Screen Doors, of which the followingis a specification, and in which like letters on the several figures indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a door which has openings through it, and the openings covered with screen-wire or such material as is usually employed to admit air and exclude dust, and on the outside of the door is attached a blind having rolling slats, which may be opened, closed, or adjusted by an attach ment thereto which extends to the inside of the capped to exclude water, and should any water get inside of it there are vertical grooves formed in the door close to the ends of the slats to serve as drains for guiding out any waterwhich might get inside of them, and
thus prevent it from getting in through the screens.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the outside of the door, showing the blind-slats closed. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inside of the door, showing more particularly the screen and means for adjusting the blind-slats; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional elevation of Fig. 1 on line 00, looking toward the slat-rod.
A represents the door, which may either be a frame or batten style, as may be required. If a frame be employed, as represented in the drawings, the ordinary panels will be omitted and the spaces covered with wire screen, as shown at B, and if a batten door be employed holes, to be covered by wire screen, must be made in it. I prefer, however, that the door he a frame, with a middle rail and two muntins, which divide the door into four panelspaces, in that the wire screen may have a strong middle support, and a suitable support be provided for attaching the adj usting-hooks centrally on the door.
0 0 represent blind-casing strips, which are placed vertically on the outside of the door to form stiles for the blind-slats D, which have ordinary round tenons formed on their ends to turn therein. These slats are rabbeted out on their lower edges and on their upper outer edges, whereby when they are shut their outer and inner surfaces lie in parallel planes, in which positions they afford much greater protection against rain and wind than if they were lapped. As a further protection against water, a hood or cap, E, is placed on the top of the blind and formed vertically in the door A, and quite closely to the ends of the slats are grooves or channels F F, which serve to carry out any water which might be driven in at the ends of the slats.
To adjust the slats to admit air and light, a wire, cord, or chain, G, is attached to the upper end of the slat-rod H and brought over a roller, I, in a bracket, J, on the door, and from the roller I extends through the door and over a roller, K, on the inside of the door, and from it extends down and terminates in a ring, L, which may be secured to any one of a series of hooks, M, to adjust the slats to any desired angle not above a level.
Glass may be used over the screens in winter.
I claim and desire to seou re by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The door A, provided with openings through it, and the openings covered on the inside of the door with wire screen, in combination with a rolling slat-blind attached to the outside of the door, and a cord connecting with the blind-rod and passing through the door, and hooks M, attached to the inside of the door for adjusting the blind-slats, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the door A, provided with the channels or grooves F, and its openings covered with wire screen B, with the blind-casing strips 0 O, the cap E, the adjusting-cord G, and hooks M, as and for the purpose set forth.
ALVIN LLOYD.
