SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,172, dated November 28, 1899.

To @ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWIN BUR- RESS, residing at Andale, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Tops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention is an improvement in chimney-tops, especially designed to provide a top whose base may be adjusted to fit different sizes of chimneys and whose top or rim is adapted for the connection of a smoke stack or pipe, which may extend up and be held by suitable guys in order to obtain a higher draft for a low chimney; and the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings,'Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 a partial vertical section, of my chimney-top. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view, of one corner of the top.

As willbe seen from the drawings, my chim-4 ney-top includes a top-rim portion A, which preferably is fixed as to size and may receive the stovepipe or stack which extends upward, as shown, and a main portion which is adjustable laterally at its lower end in order that it may be itted on chimneys of different sizes. This main portion B is preferably formed with the corner-sections O and the middle plates D, such middle plates and the wings of the corner-sections overlapping, as shown, so the sections of the main portion may be spread at their lower ends without opening the joints between such sections. At their upper ends the sections C and D are secured to and connected by the top rim A.

To hold the sections C and D tightly together at their overlapped portions, I provide the cleats E, secured to one of the sections and overlapping the other. In the construc` tion shown and as preferred the cleats E are secured at their middles to the outer sides of the middle plates D and overlap at their ends the outer sides of the wings of the corner-sections G, the middle plates fitting at their-outer edges against the inner sides of the wings of the corner-sections C, as shown. tion firmly together and to form tight joints, as is desired.

Neary the lower end of the base I provide lugs or projections F, between which fit the sections of the securing-band, which I will now describe. This securing-band is formed in sections G,connected together at their ends at GQ preferably by the interlocking means, as shown, and adjustable at G2, so they may be lengthened or shortened to tit the chimney on which the top is applied. This securingband holds the bottom from spreading when properly adj usted, and the projections F hold such band from slipping up or down.

It will be seen that the top can be easily adjusted, and being put together by bolts at H can-be readily taken'apart when desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=

1. A chimney-top substantially as described having a top-rim portion and a main portion below adjustable laterally independently of said toprim portion and composed of sections overlapping at their adjacent edges substantially as set forth.

i?. A chimney-top comprising a top-rim por tion and a main portion composed of sections secured at their upper ends to and connected at such ends by the top-rim portion and overlapping at their adjacent edges whereby they may be adjustable laterally at their lower ends substantially as set forth.

3. A chimney-top having at its upper end a portion adapted for connection with. a pipe or stack, and dared thence outward toward its lower end and adjustable laterally at such end substantially as set forth.

4. A chimney-top havin'g a main portion composed of the corner-sections, the middle sections lapping such corner-sections, and the cleats secured to one of and overlapping the other section and adapted to hold the sections together and to permit their adjustment substantially as set forth.

5. A chimney-top having an adjustable base and provided with a securing-band einbracing said base and composed of sections adjustable longitudinally and iuterlocked at their ends substantially as set forth..

6. A chimney-top having a top-rim portion and a main portion composed of corner-sec- IOO tions and middle plates overlappingy at their meeting edges, disconnected at such edges and secured to and connected at their upper ends by the top rim, such corner and middle plate sections being arranged to spring laterally at their lower e'nds whereby the Chimneytop maybe adjusted at its base substantially as set forth.

7. A chimney-top adjustable laterally at its base and having lugs or projections near the said base, and the securing-band fitting between said lugs orprojeotions and composed of sections connected at their ends and adj ustable substantially as set forth.

8. A chimney-top consisting of the top rim, the main portion Comprising corner-sections having Wings and middle plates lapping at their outer edges beneath the wings of the corner-sections, such sections being secured at their upper ends to the top rim, and the cleats secured between their ends to the outer sides of the middle sections and arranged at their ends to overlap the Wings of the cornerseetions substantially as set forth.
