SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,761, dated December 8 6-- Application filed July 21, 1896- To aZZ whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that we,WILLIAM LAMPRECHT, residing at Sedan, Gonzales county, and ED- WARD C. KRIEGER, residing at Cuero, in the county of De Vitt, State of Texas, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Chimney-Protector, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to chimney-protectors for roofs, and aims to provide a device of simple construction and which can be readily applied and will secure a water-tight joint between the smoke-pipe and the roof.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the n1i nor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one-half thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the chimney complete. Fig. 4 is an end view of a smoke-pipe section. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the baseplate secured to the ceiling-joist adjacent to the roof.

The protector or device is composed, essentially, of two parts 1 and 2 of similar construction. These parts are preferably castmetal plates and have flanges 3 at their inner or meeting edges which are apertured to receive the bolts, rivets, or other fastenings employed for securing the parts or plates together when properly assembled. A thimble or collar 4: is provided intermediate the edges of the plates or parts when united and is contracted at its outer end and made flaring at its juncture with the plates and is conicocylindrical in outline, so as to admit of a lateral movement of the lower end of the smokepipe 5 when plumbing the latter. parts 1 and 2 are brought together the said sections unitedly will form the part 4.

The protector is especially designed for slanting or pitched roofs. Hence the collar or thimble stands at an angle relatively to the plane of the plates, so as to occupy an approximately vertical position when the device is in position.

The smoke-pipe 5 is composed of a number of joints or sections, each having its ends formed with outer flanges 6, which have corresponding openings to receive the bolts by means of which the sections are held together. The bottom section is bolted to a plate 7 which is secured to the ceiling-joist, thereby fixing the position of the pipe, and the top section is supplied with a cap 8 to shed rain. The pipe 5 is placed in position and the protector is fitted about the same and secured to the roof by screws, nails, or other fastenings passed through openings provided in the plates 1 and 2.

By having the protector or device formed in halves or sections it can be placed in position or removed without requiring a disturbing of the pipe 5. The outer flanges at the meeting ends of the joints adjacent to the upper end of the collar or thimble overlap the top edge of the latter and prevent any rain passing into any possible space provided between the collar or thimble and the pipe.

The protector shown is especially designed for shingled roofs, and the plates have offset at the meeting edges and intermediate of their ends and which unitedly form a collar or thimble, substantially as shown for the purpose described.

2. A chimney-protector comprising a plate having a collar or thimble intermediate of its edges, and having offsets formed at its opposite edges to correspond with the outline of the shingles bordering upon the opening closed by the said protector, substantially as set forth.
