Description

`(No Model.)
W. B. CURTIS &'W. I-I. HUNTLEY.
SHEET METAL Roo-EINE, CEILING, 0E SID-ING.
No. 407,772. July so, 1887 WI TJV ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALLACE B. CURTIS AND VILLIAM H. HUNTLEY, OF POMEROY, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO COLONEL ELLSVORTH BRIGHT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
SHEET-METAL ROOFING, CEILING, OR SIDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4Q'7,'772, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed February 28, 1889. Serial No. 301,449. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it muy concern:
Be it known-that we, WALLACE B. CURTIS and WILLIAM H. HUNTLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Pomeroy, in the county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Roofing, Ceiling, and Siding; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
Io reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure l of the drawings is a perspective I5 view of our improved sheet-metal roofing with one of the rooting-sheets in a raised position to show the position of the anchor when secured in place;l Fig. 2, a similar view of the two roofing-sheets connected together and the .2o spring-clamp in position over the joint; Fig.
3, a detail plan view of the anchor.
The present invention has for its object to provide a strong and durable joint for the sheet-metal roofin g that will prevent the pos- 2 5 sibility of the driving rains, melting snows,
dac., from penetrating the joint, and also providing means for securely holding one of the roofing-sections to the roof of building, which objects we attain by the construction substan 3o tially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A B represent two sections of sheet-metal rooting having their meeting ends pressed out by suit- 3 5 able machinery, as shown, with the cap aand side grooves b c, the inner portion of the grooves forming ribs d, so that those of the overlapping sheet or roof-section will fit the grooves of the adjacent sheet or roof-section 4o under it. Y
The cap, with its ribs, as above described, is sprung over the cap of the roofing sheet or section A, the ribs of sheet or section B snugly fitting the grooves of the sheet or section A,
the two caps being held in position by thek spring-clamp C, which is sprung over the joint and pressed into the roofing metal between the straps e of the anchor D, thus preventing the clamp from slipping or working out of place on the joint, as the inner edges 5o of the straps form shoulders against which the edges of the clamp abut. The section A is held to roof of building by lneans of the anchor D, and, as previously described, has straps e, of sufficient length to bend over the cap of said roofing-section and press it into the grooves thereof, after which the anchor is suitably fastened by nailing or otherwise to the roof, as shown in Fig. l, and the end f thereof turned up and down over the heads 6o of the nails or other fastenings, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, and then hammered down in place as a protection to the fastenings. After this has been accomplished the roo'tin gsection B is secured in place and securely held in position by the clamp C, as previously described. The roofing-sheets are preferably constructed of sheet ir'en or steel, spring-steel being the mest desirable metal from which the clamps are made. 7o
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with sheet-Inetal-roofing sections having caps a and grooves l) c, of the spring-clamp C, adapted to be sprung' over the joint of the rooting, with its ends engaging in the grooves thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
.2. The combination, with the sheet-metal- 8o roofing sect-ions, of the anchorD,having straps e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The rooting-sections having caps with side grooves, as shown, in combination with WALLACE B. CURTIS. WILLIAM II. I-IUNTLEY.
