SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,463, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed April '7, 1890- Serial No. 346,888. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HEWITT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Roof-Gresting, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of sheet-metal roof-cresting.
The object of the invention is to produce a cresting which shall be simple in construction and easily manufactured and applied to the roof, and which shall at the same time furnish a water-proof joint at the comb of the roof. This improved cresting is made of sheetmetal in two parts or pieces. One piece consists of a strip of sheet metal bent along its middle portion into an angle to conform to the pitch of the roof to which it is applied. This piece, when applied to the comb of the roof, gives protection against the water entering at the comb. The other portion of the crest consists of a strip of sheet metal cut with suitable ornamentations at its upper edge and cut at the lower edge at regular intervals in such manner that the alternating strips may be bent in opposite directions to fit upon the upper portion or angle of the other part of the crest. The lower portion of the crest may be secured to the roof by nailing or otherwise, and the upper portion of the crest, being placed astride of the lower' portion, can be secured thereto, by soldering or otherwise, either before or after the crest is applied to the roof.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a portion of the roof and gable provided with the improved crest. Fig. 2 is a side view of the crest, and Fig. 3 an end view of the same.
Like letters of reference made use of in the several figures indicate like parts.
In said drawings, A represents the roof.
B is the angle-piece of sheet metal forming the lower part of the cresting.
C is the upper or ornamental portion of the cresting, having its lower edge cut at intervals to form the legs 0, which are alternately bent outward in opposite directions to an angle corresponding to the angle of the comb strip B, above described. The comb-strip and the ornamental section maybe united together at the factory by soldering, galvanizing, or riveting the same, the legs of said ornamental strip resting upon the comb-strip, or the two may be united upon the roof.
D is a finial piece made with legs the same as the crest-strip and united to the crest-strip in the same manner.
The sections of either the comb-strip or crest-strip may be made in any length desired or found convenient, and short lengths maybe united together on the roof by means of riveting, soldering, or nailing, as found most convenient, although I prefer that all the metal part shall be united by solderin or galvanizing.
The comb-strip alfords a water-tight protection to the comb of the roof and is easily and cheaply applied thereto.
The whole structure is one which can be easily handled by workmen, and can, if necessary, be shipped in the hat, and formed to the angle of the roof when applied.
I claim- 1. The sheet-metal cresting for roofs made in two parts and consisting of the comb-strip B and the crest-strip C, applied to the combstrip by means of the legs a, bent in opposite directions, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the comb-strip B and the crest-strip C, thelatter provided with legs a, alternately bent in opposite directions, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the comb strip B and the crest-strip O, the latter provided with legs 0, alternately bent in opposite directions, and the finial applied to the comb-strip 1n the same manner as the crest is applied, substantially as specified.
