Description

No. 794,591. PATENTED JULY 11, 1905 0. K. DEGHERD.
TABLE GUTLERYi APPLICATION FILED MAY 15.1905.
UNITED STATES Patented July 11, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
CONSTANT K. DECHERD, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL SILVER CO., OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, A COR- PORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
TABLE-CUTLERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,591, dated July 11, 1905.
Application filed May 15, 1905. Serial No. 260,448.
To (ZZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CONSTANT K. DECHERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,-have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table-Cutlery; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of a knife constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an edge view of the bolster portion thereof; Fig. 3, a side view of the lower end of the blade detached from a handle; Fig. 4, a side View of the upper portion of a handle detached from the blade and shown partially in section.
This invention relates to an improvement in table-cutlery, and particularly to such as have metal handles. In the usual construction of metal-handled table-cutlery the bolster is either formed entirely upon the blade or is formed by an intermediate piece interposed between the handle and the blade.
The object of this invention is to form the bolster partially in the blade and partially at the upper end of the handle, whereby the handle may be more securely fixed to the blade and produce a neat finished article; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I form the blade 2 with a shank 3, and at the junction of the shank with the blade I form a blade-bolster 4: on each side by thickening the blade at this point, the sides of these bolsters being parallel.
The handle 5, which may be of any approved design, is formed from metal in the usual way and adapted to receive the shank 3. At its upper end notches are cut at the front and back corresponding in width to the width of the bolster 4:, and the sides of the handle which project above the notches are rounded to form handle-bolsters 6, the edges of which merge into the edges of the bladebolster 4 and so that the handle portion and blade portion of the bolster form 'a complete bolster between the blade and the handle. By'recessing the upper edge of the handle to receive the blade-bolster a secure connection may be made by soldering, brazing, or otherwise and so that not only is a strong connection made between the handle and blade, but a neat finish is given to the parts at this point.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described improvement in tablecutlery consisting of a blade with a shank and with a bolster on each side between the blade and the shank, said bolsters having parallel sides, and a metal handle formed with notches in its upper edge to receive said blade-bolsters and having its edges rounded to merge into the lines of the said blade-bolsters whereby a complete bolster is formed by the handle and blade at their point of connection, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CONSTANT K. DECHERD.
