Description
J. B. FIRTH.
Fire-Shovels.
NO 149384 Patented April 7,1874. l
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEI'cE.
JOHN B. FIRTH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-SHOVELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,384, dated April 7, 1874; application filed February 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. FIRTH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and Sta-te of New York, have invented a new and Improved Swvel, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section on the line c c, Fig. 1, of my improved coal-shovel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of. my invention is to furnish a neat and durable coal-shovel, which may be stamped of two parts, in such a manner that not only a stronger connection of handle and shovel is produced, but also the double use of a shovel and stove-lid lifter be obtained. My invention consists in so cutting the back of the shovel, and lapping the edges over each other, that a strong connection of two thicknesses,- with two rivets only, is obtained.
In the drawing, Arepresents the shovel part,
V and B the handle attached thereto. The shovel A is made of a blank of the usual size and material, cut at the back, and stamped with one blow, in such a manner that the edges of the cut part of the back overlap each other in the shape of a V, producing thereby a stronger connection with two thicknesses of metal at the point of greatest strain, and increasing the power of resistance of the shovel against the usual wear and tear to which the same is exposed. Two rivet-holes are lthen punched through the shovel-one at the lower end, the
other through both thicknesses at the upper end of the slot. The handle end is perforated in similar manner, and the connection produced by two rivets, a, of sufficient strength. Hitherto it has not been customary to stamp the shovel at one blow, nor use two rivets only for attaching the handle. The cutting out of a V-shaped recess, for instance, requires three rivets-one at the angle ofthe V,the other two at the ends of the recesswithout producing the strength of handle-connection which is a main feature of my shovel, and which I obtain at the same time in a cheaper manner by reducing the number of rivets. The handle B is, by preference, stamped in similar manner of good and uniform material, the middle or stein part being concaved or corrugated for giving support to the thumb therein. The upper end is punched with a hole, b, for hanging up the shovel inthe usual manner, and bent in the shape of a"-attened S, for using it as a stove-lid lifter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a shovel stamped from a blank cut at the back with overlapping edges, so as to form two thicknesses, and be attached to the handle by two rivets only, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN B. FIRTH.
