IMPROVEMENT m TABLE-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,080, dated December 2, 1873; application filed January 18, 1873.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY AN- DREW, of Sheffield, in the county of York, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutlery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a simple and effective mode of securing the handles of cutlery to their holding-tangs; and it consists in the employment of a bent piece of metal, angular plate, or cap, made of any suitable metal and configuration, applied to the handle next to the bolster, or at its lower end, and provided with an opening for the insertion of the holding-tang, which is secured in position by a rivet or pin passed transversely through the cap-plate, handle, and tang. I In the drawing, Figure l is a sectional view of a table-knife possessing acap or guard plate with a single tongue. Fig. 2 is a detached view of an ornamental cap to be applied to the upper end of the handle.
The knife-blade A, which is of any form or shape, according to the kind of cutlery to which myinvention is to be applied, possesses the usual bolster B, and, in prolongation thereof,
a tang, O, which extends a suitable distance into the handle. A cap or guard plate, D, applied, as shown in Fig. l, to the upper end of the handle I, beneath the bolster, is provided with one or more tongues, E, which extend on the sides of the handle, lying either upon the surface or inlaid therein. The tang on the' blade is inserted through a slot, F, in the up per or horizontal portion of the cap or guard plate, and is provided with an opening near its lower end for the passage of a rivet or pin, G, passing transversely through the tongue of the cap-plate. Said rivet thus performs the double functions of securing the cap-plate and blade firmly in position without resorting to additional fastening devices.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is-- A slotted tongue-plate, D E F, and transverse perforated blade-tang O, secured by the same rivet, as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification signed by me this 8th day of October, 1872.
