Description

V 0. SMITH. COAL-SC-U'ITLE'.
Patenced Feb.29,1876.
N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTO UNITED STATES CHARLES SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m COAL-SCIUITTLYES.
Specification formiu g part of Letters Patent To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ooal- Hod; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will .enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of. this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical Section of my coal-hod. Fig.2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 isa plan of the blank which I use for the body of my hod. Figs. 4. and 5am modifications of this blank. Similar letters indicate. corresponding parts. This invention relates to an improvement on a coal-hod for which a patent was granted to me October 24,1871, No. 120,536, and which is constructed of two pieces of sheet metal, each being a counterpart of the other, properly formed and united together by the front and rear joints, and the top spout-joint.
My present improvement consists in forming the body of a-coal-hod of a single piece of sheet metal cut out and shaped in such a manner that the same can be united with a front and rear, joint, or with a rear and top spout-joint, or with a front and top spoutjoint, leaving a suitableopening for the mouth and another for the reception of the base or hoop, together with the bottom.
In the drawing, the letter A'designates the body of my coal-hod, which is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, such as shown No- 174,314, dated February 29, 1876; application filed October 8, 1875.
in. Figs. 3, 4, and 5. If the blank, Fig. 3, is used, the body of the hod has a front joint,a, and rear joint b, such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing; but if the blank Fig. 4 is used the body has a rear joint and a top spoutjoint, and if the blank Fig. 5 is used, the body has a front joint and a top spout-joint. All these blanks are cut out in such a man ner that only two joints are required to form "to receive the hoop or base (J, which may be constructed in any other desirable manner. By these means much labor can be saved in the construction of a coal-hod, although blanks when out out in one piece, as above described, will not out quite as economically asthey do'when cut in two pieces, as described in my patent, No. 120,336.
What I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is v A coal-hod, the body and spout of which are formed of a single piece of sheet. metal,
leaving openings for the mouth 0 and for the reception of the base or bottom, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
CHARLES SMITH. Witnesses:
