DRESS PASTENING. PPLmA'noN FILED 001.12.1904;

UNITED STATES Patented June 6, 1905.
EDUARD BERGMANN, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
DRESS-FASTENING.
SPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,866, dated June 6, 1905.
Application filed October 12, 1904. Serial No. 228,235.
To all whom it may concern,.- Y
Beit known that I, EDUARD BERGMANN, first lieutenant in the imperial royal Austrian army, a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing at 40 Weyringerstrasse, in the city of Vienna 1V, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Dress-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Hooks and eyes are usually employed for connecting ladies skirts with the blouse or the like, by which means the entire weight of the skirt is transmitted to a few comparatively small portions of material, which is consef quently often torn. Now in order to spare the skirt and blouse in accordance with this invention the strain upon the material is distributed over a larger area, and the arrangement of the connections is at the same time simplified.
To this end the device which forms the subject of this invention consists of four small plates, two of which serve for seizing the blouse and two'for seizing the skirt-band. Upon one of the plates seizing the dress hooks are arranged, and these may engage in eyes provided on one of the plates for the blouse,
by which means the skirt is attached to the blouse. I
Two constructional forms of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 shows the plates for the blouse in plan and in cross-section. Fig. 2 represents the plates for the skirt inI a similar manner, and .Fig 3 shows the connection of the skirt with the blouse by means of the foregoing device. Fig. 4 illustrates a second constructional form of the plates for the blouse in plan and in cross-section. Fig. 5 is a similar representation of the plates for the skirt, and Fig. 6 shows in section the connection of the skirt and blouse.
The device consists of` four plates 1, 2, 3, and
4, of which the plates 1 and 2 are for the blouse, and 3 and 4 for the skirt. In order to arrange the device in position, the lugs or hooks 5 of the plates 2 and 3 are inserted into the corresponding slots^6 of the plates 1 and 4 and bent down, the edge of the material of the blouse 7 having previously been introduced between the plates 1 and 2 and the band of the skirt -8 between the plates 3 and 4, whereby theskirt and blouse arermly gripped between the respective plates. In order to fasten the skirt 8 to the blouse 7, the hooks 9 of the plate 4 are inserted in the eyes 10 of the plate 2, thus establishing a readily-releasable connection.
The constructional form illustrated in Figs.
4 to 6 differs from that already described only y owing to the fact that all the plates 1', 2', 3', and 4' are formed with pockets or recesses 11 in several places where the edge of the material is to be inserted, so thata better hold is aorded when the material is gripped. The hooks 5' and 9' are preferably formed by partially stamping out and bending over the stamped-out portion and the slots 6' by stamping out. In this constructional form the strain upon the material is distributed over the whole length of the plates 1 and 4', and tearing of the material is almost impossible.
The arrangement of this device in position is very simple and may be effected without any tool and without sewing, so that wrenching off, such as is frequently the case with ordinary hooks, is prevented'. Owing to the fact that the interval between the eyes and hooks is invariable, it is impossible for the blouse to become displaced. A further advantage is presented when a skirt is Worn with a number ofblouses which have been made by different dressmakers. If one portion of the deviceis used with the skirt, agreement in the intervals separating the eyes and hooks is insured, when the second part of the device is arranged on the blouse, which may be eected in an exceedingly short time.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is The combination, in a dress-fastener, of a IOO Slotted plate, provided with recesses, hooks on In testimony that I claim the foregoing as said plate, a second slotted plate provided with my invention I have signed my name in presl* recesses, eyes on said second plate adaptei to ence of two subscribing witnesses. receive said hooks, a recessed clamping-p ate Y i T 5 for each of the aforesaid plates, and lugs in EDUARD BERGMANB" the recesses of the clamping-plates adapted to Witnesses: register with and pass through said slots, for HARRY BELMONT, the purpose specified.
