application filed May 15,
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be 1t known that I, JEHU B. DoBsoHU'rz,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Mis- 5 souri, have invented certain new .and useful Improvements in Hairpins, of which the lfollowing is a specification containing a full,
clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a art hereof.
Iy invention relates to improvements 1n hairpins, and has for its primary object the construction of a pin which when applied to the hair in use, will interlock itself with the hair and prevent its accidental falling out.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan View of my hairpin. Fig. 2 is a fragmental view, illustrating the position in which the strands of the hair assume when the device is in use.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of a slightly modified form.
Referring to the drawings:
t indicates the prongs which may be corrugated as at 5, or if desired the same may be left straight. Formed integral with the prongs is the head of the hairpin 6, the upper portion 7 of which represents the segment of a circle. The lower portion of thel head 7 is provided with downwardly curved portions 8, and upwardly projecting portions 9.
When my device is applied to the hair,
the hair will enter between the prongs 4 and become seated in the downwardly curved portions 8 on the `outside of the upwardly projecting shoulders 9. In other words, the
hair will become lodged behind the upwardly projecting shoulders '9 and the hairpin will be held in place by the hair and will not become accidentally dislodged.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a slightly modiied form, wherein the upper portion 7 of the head is slightly flattened, as at l0. The
exact curvature of the upper portion of the head is not material, the essential feature beingthe downwardly bent portions 8, andl the upwardly projecting shoulders 9, for engaging the hair.
It will be observed that the downwardly 1922. Serial No. 560,875.
bent portions and the upper projecting shoulders which extend into the head form ron each side of the prongs, troughs or pockets in which the hair which has passed between the prongs is received and lodged. See Fig. 2 for illustration.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A hairpin comprising apair of spaced apart prongs, a head having a downwardly curved upper portion formed integral with the prongs, said head being provided in its lower portion with downwardly curved bent portions spaced apart from and on the outside of the prongs, and adjacent the prongs with upwardly extending portions forming shoulders, said shoulders and downwardly bent portions being spaced apart and forining pockets adapted to engage the hair when the pin is in use to receive and prevent it from falling out.
2. A hairpin comprising a pair of spaced. apart prongs, a head formed integral with the prongs and communicating with ythe space between the prongs, said head having its upper portion curved and said head being provided in its lower portion with downwardly curved bent portions spaced apart from the outside of the prongs, and adjacent thev prongs with shoulders extending upwardly within the head and above the downwardly curved portions, said shoulders and downwardly bent portions spaced apart and forming pockets adapted to receive and engage the hair which has passed between the prongs when the pin is in use to prevent it from falling out.
3. .er hairpin comprising a pair of prongs, a curved head formed integral with said prongs, said head being provided in its lower portion with downwardly curved bent portions and adjacent the prongs with upwardly bent portions spaced apart from the downwardly bent portions, said upwardly bent portions being integral with the prongs and forming shoulders and pockets adapted to engage the hair for securing the pin therein when in use.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specication.
JEIiU B. DOBSCI-IUTZ.
