CARD INDEX.
Application filed ctober29, 1924.V Serial No. '746,635.-
T 0 all wlw/m, it may concern. Be it known that I` ROBERT C. RUSSELL: a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county ofAllegh/enyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inV Card Indexes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full7 clear,. and exactl dcscription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make' and use the'same.
This invention relates to improvements ,in indexes and more particularly to Vsuch as are known as visible indexes,-.one object of i the present invention being to so construct a.
visible index that the index elements shall be supported one by another in such definite relation to each other that the exposed portions of the elements which contain the index data shall be uniform in dimensions, and so ythat the index elements may be readily as` sembled and moved or removed but so that they will be normally retained in proper relation to each other. v
With this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction'as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. f In the accompanying drawings,-'
Figure l is a face view illustrating an embodirnent of my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view in perspective of one of the indexv elements.
Figure 3 is a rear faceview showing a plurality of index elements.
Figure 4 is a view in section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a rear view in perspective illustrating a modification, and
' Figure 6 is a rearface view showing a plurality of index elements of the modified vided inwardly of its respective ends with approximately inverted V-shaped tonguesv7 out from the material of the card or element and bent upwardly adjacent to the rear face of the latter so as to forni pockets. The material is somewliatrounded at the junctures of the tongues7 with the bodyportion ofthe card or element 2 as shown at 8, .Figure 4, and said tongues will have such silience or spring action as to make sufficient p f I rrictional 'engagement with the base 5 or he holder l as to hold the index elements in proper position when their end portions are engaged in the guide-ways 6 of the holder. l/Vhen the tongues 7 shall have Abeen struck from the material of the card ,and bent upwardly7 approximately horizontal tongues 9 will be formed inwardly from respective ends of the card or element. 'The tongues 9 of each'pair project toward each otherand their adjacent ends are preferably rounded. Between the inner ends of the inner tongues of each pain a depending flange 10 is pro-fr vided and the ends of this flange are beveled. and form shoulders ll. 'Y Y It will be observed that each index element is provided with a. pair of approxi-` mately horizontal tongues inwardly removed from each end of the element and that each pair of tongues 9 are disposed below a pocket formed by one of the upturned spring tongues 7 ,-thepairs vof tongues 9 being thus located below the pockets formed `by the tongues 7. In order to facilitate the assembling of the index elements without annoyingconflict with each other, the end portions of each element may be beveled as at 12. In assembling the indexelements the pairs of tongues 9 of one element will become seated in the pockets formedA by the upturned tongues 7 of an adjacent element so that the exposed portions of the several index elements will be uniformV in proportions the beveled ends of the flanges l() will facilitatethe guiding of the index elements to proper positions during the act of assembling and the shoulders l1 formed by the beveled ends of flanges 10 vof one element will becomeA disposed between' the tongues 7 of an adjacent element and thus prevent lateral displacement of the elements relatively to each other. Y
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 5 and 6, each index element is prow vided with a single inwardly projecting tongue 9a beyond respective sides of thev center of the element and the spring tongues 7 a are beveled at their outer end portions only.
Having fully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
l. In 'an index, an index element provided between its center and eaeli end with pockets adjacent its rear face and with inwardly projecting, approximately horizontal tongues below the respective pockets and adapted to enter similar pockets on an adjacent index element.
2. ln an index, the combination with a holder having guide-ways, of a plurality of index elements adapted at their ends to enter said guide-ways, each index element having a plurality of upturned tongues adjacent its rear face and each index element having an inwardly projecting7 approximately horizontal tongue below each pocket formed by the upturned tongues and adapted to enter similar pockets in adjacent index element.
3. In an index, the combination with a holder provided at its sides with guideways, of a plurality of index elements, each having upturned spring tongues adapted to frictionally engage the holder at points between the said guide-ways and to form pockets, and each index element having tonguesbelow such pockets and adapted to enter similar pockets on an adj aeent index element.
4. In an index, an index element provided between its center and each end with approximaely inverted tl-shaped upturned tongues forming pockets adjacent'its rear face and with pairs o1c approximately horizontal tongues below said pockets7 the tongues of each pair projecting` towards each other and adapted to enter pockets of an adjacent index element.
In testimony whereof, l have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
