Description
' May 13,. 1924. I
HAIRPIN:
. Fil Mam m. 1923 INVENTOR WITNESS ATTORNEY Patented May 13, 1924.
BLAINE W. ODOM, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
HAIRPIN.
Application filed May 18, 1923. Serial No. 639,889.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, BLAINE W. OnoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hairpins, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a hair pin constructed with a view to effectively hold in hair and precluding casual displacement of the pin from the hair. and one that is susceptible of economic production and is simple and well adapted as a whole to withstand the usage to which hair pins are ordinarily subjected.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a front elevation of my novel hair pin.
Figure 2 is a cross-section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail longitudinal section taken. in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1 and showing the manner in which the intermediate tang of the pin is attached at its heel end to the bight of the loop through the medium of which the outer tangs are joined.
Figure 4 is a detail section at right angles to Figure 3.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The intermediate tang of my novel hair pin is numbered 1, and the outer tangs are numbered 3. All of the said tangs are preferably crimped as designated by 3, the crimps of the intermediate tang 1 being disposed at right angles to the crimps of the outer tangs as illustrated in order to enable the pin to better hold itself against casual displacement from a mass of hair. Integral with the tangs 2 and extending between the heel ends thereof is a loop 4:, and it will be readily understood that the bight of the said loop at serves for the strong connection of the heel end of the intermediate tang 1, the said heel end which is numbered 6 being tightly bent about the said bight 5 as illustrated.
After the application and connection of the intermediate tang 1 in the relation defined, the whole heel portion of the hair pin is dipped in or is otherwise supplied with an appropriate plastic composition such as rubber or gutta percha, the said composition serving when it is set or becomes hard to contribute to the strength of the connection between the intermediate tang 1 and the side tangs 2. It will also be appreciated that the said composition when set or hardened will serve to present a smooth surface to the hair and will preclude the possibility of the hook end of the intermediate tang 1 being caught in or by the hair. 7
Manifestly my novel hair pin is simple and inexpensive in construction. and will not only serve efiiciently in the holding of hair. but will not be liable to be accidentally displaced from a mass of hair. It will also be appreciated that the pin is simple and inexpensive and is strong and durable.
Inasmuch as my invention does not reside in the character of the composition referred to for covering the connection between the intermediate tang 1 and the outer tangs 2, I have deemed it unnecessary to explicitly describe the said composition. it being within the purview of my invention to use a composition of rubber or gutta percha as before described or a composition including celluloid or any other appropriate composition comnatible with the purpose of one part of my invention in which the plastic covering is utilized to cover the hook connection between the intermediate tang 1 and the bight of the loop joining the heel ends of the outer tangs 2.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire. however. to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is I A hair pin comprising outer tangs, an integral loop joining the heel ends of the said outer tangs, an intermediate tang having a hook end embracing the bight of the loop midway between the outer tangs, and a covering of plastic material disposed on the bight-portion of the said loop and over the connection between the intermediate tang 10 and the said bight portion and also on the portions of the several tangs adjacent to said bight portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
BLAINE W. ODOM.
