To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT W. HANKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Le Mars, in the county of Plymouth and State of Iowa, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Hairpins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair pins and has for one of its objects the provision of means for causing the legs of the pin to move in the direction of each other when inserted or embedded within the hair, thus confining some of the hair between the legs which prevents the pin from becoming lost or displaced from the hair.

Another object of this invention is the provision of meanson one leg adapted to dispose its free end in closer proximity to the other leg than the remaining portion thereof so that on the pin being embedded in the hair, the free end of said leg will overlie or cross the other leg thereby firmly securing the pin in the hair.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a hair pin of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in cer tain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hair pin constructed in'accordance with my invention,

Fig. 3 is an edge view illustrating the curvature of the locking shoulders.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety a hair in constructed from wire or any other material suitable for the purpose and said pin consists of a bight portion 2 and parallel legs 3 and 4. Adjacent the closed end of the pin, each leg is provided with a convolute portion forming a shoulder 5 adapted to retain the pin in the hair against accidental displacement. The retaining shoulders 5 extend laterally beyond the outer side edges of the pin and outwardly beyond one face thereof and in view thereof form a plurality of offset curved portions which while being capable of establishing a locking connection-with the hair, will permit the pin to be applied and removed with comparative ease and without breaking the hair. The leg 4: is curved inwardly adjacent the free end to form an angular portion 6 which disposes the free end of said leg l'in closer proximity to the leg 3 than the remaining portion thereof and also makes the leg 4; terminate short of the leg 3 which permits the hair to freely enter between said legs when inserting the pin in the hair. The angular portion 6 is curved arcuately to dispose itself in a plane beyond the legs which causes the free end of the leg 4: to overlap the free end of the leg 3, when the shoulders are compressed or moved in the direction of each other by the hair, thus preventing the hair between said legs from accidentally passing outwardly between the ends thereof and thereby firmly locking or holding the pin within the hair.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that a pin of the above described character will automatically lock itself within the hair when inserted therein thus obviating the loss of the same from the hair and also it will be noted that the pin will firmly and efiiciently hold the hair in its proper place.

To remove the pin from the hair, the bight portion 2 is gripped with the fingers and drawn outwardly of the hair exposing the shoulders 55, which releases the pressure thereon permitting the legs to move apart and the hair between the legs to pass between the ends thereof. The angular portion 6 of the leg 4 retards the outward moveconstruction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing fromthe spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. p 7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s A hair pin including a pair of legs and a connecting portion, said legs adjacent the connecting portion being each providedwith a convolute portion forming a shoulder adapted to retain the device in the hair against accidental displacement, said shoulders being extended laterally beyond the outer side edges of the legs and outwardly beyond one face of said legs to form a plu- 15 rality of offset curved portions adapted to establish a locking connection with the hair, one of said legs adjacent its free end being curved inwardly and arcuately to form an angular portion which is disposed in a plane 20 beyond the legs.
