Description

@with iatreatent @fitta SAMUEL WEHRLY, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNCR TO HIM- SELF AND E. V.-SUTTER. 0F SAME PLACE.
Letters .Patent No. 78,703, dated June 9, 1868; antedatecl May 4, 1868.
' IMPROVE)v sPUns.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL WEHRLY, of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, Statie of California, have invented an Improved Spur; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suicient to enable any person skilled in theart or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention and improvements without further invention or experiment.
The o bject'of my invention is to provide an improved spur for horsemen, and it consists principally in an .improved mechanism for attaching-the spur quickly and firmly to the boot, thus dispensing with the strap or screws which are used. y
To lmore fully describe my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, of which-'- Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the spur. vFigure 2 is a sideelevation, showing the` slide. Figure 3 is a. top vfievv.v Figure 4 is a front view. 4 A Similar letters of reference in each of the gures indicate like parts'. A A is a curved metal band, which encircles the heel of the boot, and which has the spur-wheel B supported by the arm C at the back of A, as in ordinary spurs. Y
To the sides of the band A, andinear the front extremities, are attached the retaining-bolts or serews'a a, beneath which the sliding plate b works. To the front end of this plate is attached, by a small projection, the spring c, which extends back over the plate b. An arm, d, extends upwards fromv this spring, which engages the fixed rack m,attached to the side ofthe hand A. The strap n, is fastened to the sliding plate b5 and passes beneath the boot in from; of the heel.
A curved steel dog, o, is fastened to the inner part of the curved band A behind, which enters between the top ofthe heel and the counter of the boot. The strap n is then brought closely against the front part of the boot-heel, thus holding'the spur-firmly in place. The spring c forces the arm d against the rack m, and holds it wherever desired.
When the spur is to be removed, the spring cis raised hy means of the projections r r, and the slide allowed to slip forward, thus moving the strap n, and releasing the dog o.
By. this device,.a neat and substantial spur isobtained, which is free from the diiculties of attaching and 'taking off, and, at the same time, is so secu're as to be almost impossible to lose, this making it very valuable for cavalry.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, `and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spur, having the dog o, the rack m, and arm d, together with the spring c and slotted plate b, the whole constructedand operating substantially as and for the purpose described. I
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal. 4
