TO WIIOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS DITTON, of the city of Auburn, in Cayuga county, State of New York, have invented anew and improved Mode of Constructing Halter-Buckles, having three tongues and aloop; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a three-tongued buckle, and its object is to save expense in the making or manufacture of what is commonly known among harness-makers as the five-ringed halter; and in order that others may know how to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and-utode of operation.
Figure 1 is a. representation ot' a halter constructed after my plan, with-the three-tonguei buckle occupy-- ing the place and performing the function of four of therings in a i'vefringed halter.
It will be perceived that the fourrpieces, A, B, C, and D, are all held in position by the four buckles E, F, G, H; that being buckled, any one or all of the said pieces may he increased or diminished in length, thus increasing or diminishing the size ofthe halter in` such manner as tc adapt it to any size required.
Any farmer can construct a. halter by having'the buckles and strips of leather, and in fifteen minutes accomplish the same vend that heretofore has required the skilful craftsman one-third of a day. It is regarded among harness-makers to be a good days'work to make three live-ringed halters. I
Figure 2'is a representation ofthe buckle.
It is divided into four-parts or sections, I, J, K, and L.
The three sections, I, L, K, have each' a tongue, M, N, O, all hinged to theframework P P, and forming small square, Q, in the centre-of the external framework R ofthe buckle.
On the rim of buckle,` opposite the section J, is afloop, S, into which is inserted the end of the straps, as shown at T, iig. 1, for the'purpose of holding them in position. v
Having above minutely described my invention, what I claim' as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, i .I v
1. In combination with the three-tongued buckle, the loop S for securing 'theends of the straps, substantially 'as described. v i I l 2. The application and use of the said bucklel in the manufacture of halters, when the same is constructed. and used in the manner above specified.
FRAN GIS DITTON.
