Description

LEW/ii, SWIM,
e? o" 7 l i tinned \WQW- fitatm CHARLES B. PAYNE, OF CLINTON, ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 83,787, dated November 3, 1868.
IMPROVED GAG-SWIVEL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making par: of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. PAYNE, of Clinton, in the county of Dewitt, and in the State of Illinois, have invented a certain new. and useful Improvement in Gag-Swivels; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a gag-swivel and buckle, which will save nearly one-half of the leather now used, and at the same time be more durable, and can be made ornamental in any way desired.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I till now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.
A represents a gag-swivel, made of malleable iron or other suitable material, one end of which forms a buckle, and the other a tongue, which is riveted to the strap or leather, the swivel itself being formed of two side-bars an, and a centre-bar b, bulging out beyond the other two.
The buckle may be made as any ordinary buckle, or it may be made witha stationary tongue, as shown in figure 2.
Instead of forming a tongue on the end of the gagswivel, and riveting the same to the leather, it may be provided with a loop, to which the strap is then stitched.
The two side-bars a a may be dispensed with, in which case the strap will extend up into the buckle, and form, itself, the back part of the swivel, the centrebar I) being, by its tongue, riveted to the same.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The gag-swivel, formed of one piece of metal, and composed of the two bars (a a, and outwardly-curved bar b, with a buckleat one end, and with a rivet-plate at the other, all substantiallyas herein set forth.
In testimony thatl claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 29th day of June, 1868.
' CHARLES E. PAYNE.
