I No. 784,319.
J. H. GREENWAY.
DOOR SECURING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED 00112 1904 [NVE/VTOR J Edam/22mg ,mode of application of my invention.
UNITED STATES Patented March '7, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
DOOR-SECURING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,319, dated March 7, 1905.
Application filed October 12, 1904. Serial No. 228.201.
To all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that I, J OI-INE H. GREENWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeneville, in the county ofGreene and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety devices for holding doors closed; and it consists in the provision of an angled bar having teeth at the end thereof designed to engage the frame of a door and in the provision of a holder for said bar which carries a thumb-screw designed to engage a perforation in said bar to hold the same against longitudinal movement.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in arrangements and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the bar-holding device and througha door and door-frame, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking-bar.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a door, and B the frame thereof. C designates the locking-bar, which has an angled end C, provided with teeth C designed to engage in the wall of the recessed portion of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The holder for the locking-bar comprises the two angled plates D and D, which are flanged, and one of said plates, D, isoutwardly bent, providing a guideway for said bar, as shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings. Said plate D is provided with a boss E, having a threaded aperture in the end thereof designed to receive a thumb -screw F, which has a shoulder F, which serves as a stop to hold the screw within the hollow portion of said boss, while the end of the screw f beyond the shoulder is adapted to engage one of the perforations H in said bar C, whereby the bar may be ad justed to fit doors of different thicknesses.
By the provision of a device embodying the features of my invention it will be observed that the teeth at the angled end of the bar are pushed into the wall of the recess in the frame of the door, as shown in Fig. 2, after which the door may be closed, as shown. The plates forming the holder are pushed over the bar, as shown in Fig. 1, after which the screw is turned so that the end thereof will engage one of the apertures H, after which the door will be securely prevented from being opened. It will also be noted that the locking device may be easily and quickly adjusted to any door and removed therefrom without unnecessarily marring the parts.
While I have shown a particular construction of device embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that the details of construction of the apparatus may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A door-securing device consisting of an angled bar with teeth at the end thereof adapted for engagement with the frame of a door, aholder through which said bar passes, a screw carried by said holder and designed to engage a perforation in said bar, as set forth.
2. A device for holding doors consisting of an angled bar with teeth at one end thereof designed to engage the frame of a door, said bar provided with perforations, a holder comprising two angled plates, one of said plates having an offset to receive said bar, a thumbscrew fitted in a threaded aperture in a boss on one of said plates, the end of said screw designed to engage'a perforation in said plate, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
