No. 780,179. PATENTED JAN. 17, 1905,

MINERS LAMP ATTAUHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 31, 1904.

STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lVIlNERS-LAWIP ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 780,179, dated January 17, 1905. Application filed May 31,1904. Serial No. 210,321.
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AL'roN L. HILEMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Haysville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamp Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to miners-lamp attachment for caps, and one object thereof is to construct the same in such a manner so as the lamp will be free to move in any direction and still retain an upright position.
A further object of the invention is that the lamp may be detached from its support, as it is often desired to hang the lamp along the walls or place the same on posts in the mine. This is accomplished by using the sharpened hook.
A still further object of the invention over other styles is that no part of the lamp comes in contact with the perpendicular face of the plate. This does away with the constant knocking, thereby not only increasing the life of the lamp, but gives a more uniform light.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lamp attachment, showing it applied to a cap. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front View. Fig. 41 is a top plan view.
In the drawings 1 have shown the plate .1 permanently riveted to the cap, as at 2, but, if desired, can use the ordinary paper or glove fastener, which will be much more desirable and convenient, as the same can be detached from the cap at will.
The lamp-supporting bar 3 is loosely mounted in keepers 4, arranged some distance apart to allow the bar to move in and out, and the stop pin 5 prevents it from becoming entirely removed from the keepers 4:. The end of the supporting-bar is flattened, the said flattened portion being bent to form the right-angularly disposed sides 9 and 9. Projecting inwardly from the side 9 is a short shaft or lug 6, with an aperture 7 formed in the end for the ad mission of the tapering pin 8. This pin is first inserted through an opening which is formed in the iiatened-out portion 9, which is parallel with the shaft 6.
The tapered pin 8 is not only used to retain the lamp on the shaft 6, but as the wick of the lamp is consumed in burning can use the same to draw the wick out of the spout 10.
Soldered to the side of the lamp is a strip of material 11, which surrounds the upright arm 12, as at 13, and formed on the end of this arm is a sharpend hook 1 1. The end of the arm is provided with an aperture adapted to loosely lit on the shaft or lug 6 and is held thereon by the pin 8. When working under ground or in places where the miner desires to remove his cap, the hook 1 1 provides means that will readily engage a surface to support the lamp, it beingunderstood that the lamp is detached .from its supports on the cap.
The tapered pin 8 will prevent the lamp from coming in contact with the perpendicular face of plate 1, as the pin bears against the base of the lamp, as at 15, assuring a level position to the lamp at all times.
The details of construction that I have shown and described may be modified by any one skilled in the art without departing from, my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a cap and plate secured thereto, keepers on the plate, said keepers being suitably spaced, a bar loosely mounted in the keepers, a pin on the bar adapted to abut the keepers to limit the longitudinal movement of the said bar and a lamp supported by the bar.
2. in combination with a cap and a plate secured thereto, a bar loosely mounted in the plate, an end of the rod being flattened, a shaft on the flattened portion extending at right angles to the rod, and a lamp pivotally supported by the said shaft.
3. In combination with a cap and a plate secured thereto, a bar loosely mounted in the cap, an end of the rod being flattened and a portion of the flattened end being suitably bent With relation to the remaining portion, a shaft projecting from the bent portion, and a lamp pivotally supported by the shaft.
4:. In combination with a cap and a plate attached thereto, a bar loosely mounted in the cap, an end of the bar being flattened and a portion of the flattened end being bent at right angles, a shaft on the bent portion, and a lamp supported by the shaft.
5. In combination with a cap and a plate secured thereto, a bar loosely mounted in the plate, a shaft on the end of the bar, a lamp supported by the shaft, and a pin passing through the bar and shaft to hold said lamp on the bar.
6. In combination with a cap and a plate secured thereto, a bar loosely mounted in the plate, a shaft on the end of the bar, a lamp supported by the shaft and a pin passing through both the bar and shaft to hold the lamp on said shaft, the said pin being of such length as to bear against the base of the lamp.
7. In combination with a cap and a plate secured thereto, a bar loosely mounted in the plate, a shaft on the bar, a lamp, an arm on the lamp having an aperture adapted to receive the shaft, and means for holding the arm on the lamp.
8. In combination with a cap and a plate secured thereto, a bar loosely mounted in the plate, a shaft on the bar, a lamp, an arm terminating in a hook on the lamp, said arm having an aperture adapted to receive the shaft on the bar.
9. In combination with a cap and a plate secured thereto, an arm loosely mounted in the plate, the end of the bar being flattened and having a portion bent at an angle, a shaft on the bent portion, a lamp, an arm on the lamp having an aperture receiving the shaft on the bent portion, and a pin passing through an aperture in the flattened portion and an aperture in the shaft and extending downwardly and bearing against the base of the lamp, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 28th day of May, 1904.
ALTON L. HILEMAN.
