WALTER I-I. PENICK, OF MARTIN, TENNESSEE.
LAMP.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11 1912.
Application filed March 16, 1912. Serial No. 684,350.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. PENICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martin, in the county of Weakley and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamps.
An object of the invention is to provide a match receptacle attachment for the lamp whereby the matches can be conveniently stored and carried from place to place with the lamp.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure for the match receptacle which will serve to prevent the accidental displacement ofthe matches during the handling of the lamp.
Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the lamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
The lamp 1 herein shown is constructed of glass and it is provided with an integral supporting base 2. This base is provided with a receptacle 3 whose walls extend down as at 4 and then up as at 5 where they merge directly into a port-ion 6 of the base 2. This portion 6 is of concavo-convex form and it is provided with a roughened striking surface 7 over which the matches may be drawn and ignited.
The match receptacle which is formed as described in the base of the lamp opens upwardly and with a view to preventing the accidental spilling of the matches in the careless handling of the lamp I provide a cover plate or closure 8 which is designed to cover the open end of the match receptacle as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The cover plate is provided at its inner corners with ears 9 through which the pintles 10 extend. The side walls of the match receptacle are provided with socket-s 11 into which the outer ends of the pintles 10 extend. The innetends of the pintles are headed as at 12, being disposed against the inner sides of the ears 9 and confined thereagainst by retaining tongues 13 which are struck up from the said closure plate. The forward end of the cover plate is provided with a spring latch 14 which is adapted to snap over the port-ion 6 of the lamp base. In this manner the closure plate maybe securely held in a position which will cover the open end of the match receptacle.
In the preferred embodiment ofthe invention the match receptacle is designed to support matches in horizontal positions. In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 the match receptacle 15 is substantially identical in construction with the receptacle 3, the differences being in the arrangement of the receptacle so as to support the matches in vertical positions.
M A lamp base having a receptacle therein, tivo of the walls of the receptacle having sockets therein, a closure adapted to cover the receptacle, ears carried by the closure, pintles extending through the ears and into the sockets, and portions struck up from the closure and engaging the pintles to hold them operatively associated with the said ears.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER H. PENICK.
