Description

G. MCKINNONV .BED-PAN.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. I2, 1914.l
1,178,453, Patented @114,1916.
y w I GRAHAM MCKINNON, OF ROWLAND, NORTH CAROLINA.
BED-PAN;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Application led December 12, 1914. Serial No. 876,904.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GRAHAM MGKINNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rowland, in the county of Robeson and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in the construction of bed pans, and an object of the invention is to provide a pan which shall be sustained when arranged 'n an opening in a mattress provided there- With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the bed pan in position thereon, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bed pan, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the block or filler member for the opening in the mattress.
Referring now vto the drawing indetail, the-numeral l designates a mattress of the ordinary construction but which is provided at a suitable point therein with a round opening 2.
The numeral 3 designates a filler member or plug which is adapted to be received within the opening to complete the mattress, the said block conforming to the shape of the opening and frictionally engaging with the side walls provided by the said opening to sustain the same in proper position upon the mattress.
The mattress is primarily adapted for use in hospitals or in sick rooms and the plug 3, while frictionally engaging with the walls of the opening 2 of the mattress 1, may be readily removed therefrom and a bed pan 4 'arranged within the said opening.: The bed pan 4 comprises a body portion conforming to the shape of the opening 2 and is of a depth corresponding approximately to the thickness of the mattress. The bed pan is provided upon its 'open upper surface at arranged as to engage with the upper and lower surfacesof the mattress 1, while positioned upon the upper beaded edge of the bedpan opposite the terminal of the edges of the lip 5 with the said bead are downwardly extending eye members 8, one being arranged diametrically opposite the other and both being adapted to receive the hook ends of a handle or bail 9.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A bed pan including a body portion having one of its ends formed with an angular lip which is inclined to the mouth of the pan, a bail for the pan, said pan being provided with longitudinally extending upper andlower cleats.
2. A bed pan including a body member having a beaded top, an angular lip arranged upon the beaded top to one end of the pan and having its sides inclined gradually to the said beaded top of the pan, said pan diametrically opposite the bead being provided with upper and lower cleats, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GRAHAM MCKINNON.
