CHARLES WESLEY SMITH, OF VILLA RIDGE, MISSOURI.
PAN-Ll FTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,401, dated November 5, 1895.
Application filed July 10, 1894. Serial No. 517,101. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WESLEY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Villa Ridge, county of Franklin, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pan-Lifters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to an improvement in devices for lifting pans, trays, stove-lids, &c.; and the object in view is to provide in one article a combined pan-lifter and stovelid support in which provision is made for adjusting and holding a sliding foot-piece with relation to the main or socket portion of the lifter, so as to accommodate pans or trays of different heights, the sliding footpiece and securing-screw being let'into the front face of the socket in such manner as to lie flush therewith, thus preventing any liability of injuring or indenting a thin or delicate pan.
To the above end the invention consists in, a combined pan and stove-lid lifter embodying certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved lifting device, the same being constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate the use of the device in practice.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a metal socket, which is provided with rearwardly-extending integral portions 2, having a curved cross-sectional shape and spaced apart, so as to receive between them the end of a handle 3, of any suitable material and any convenient size, the socket being secured upon the end of the handle by means of suitable fasteners 4. The front face of the socket is formed with a groove 5, which extends across the same and is adapted to refoot-piece 7. The sliding shank 6 corresponds in cross-sectional shape to the slidegroove 5, so that when placed therein it will lie flush with and not project beyond the front face of the socket 1. The sliding shank 6 isalso provided with a longitudinal slot 8 and is provided adjacent to said slot and upon each side thereof with oppositely-disposed segmental countersinks 9, which are adapted to receive the head of a securingscrew 10, the shank of which passes through said slot and into a threaded hole in the socket 1. This construction enables the head of the screw to rest within and be flush with the outer face of the socket 1 and sliding shank 6 and aifords a smooth and unbroken surface, which will obviate any liability of the lifter indenting or injuring the pan to which it is applied. The foot 7 is expanded in width beyond the lateral edges of the sliding shank 6 to form oppositely-disposed shoulders 11, which limit the upward movement of the adjustable foot-piece relatively to the socket 1.
12 designates a pair of depending hooks which are formed integrally with the socket 1 and rotated at the top edge thereof and upon opposite sides of the slide-groove 5. These depending hooks engage the top edge of the pan or tray, while the foot-piece 7 passes beneath the bottom edge thereof and assists in lifting the same and preventing the hooks 12 from slipping from their engagement, as shown in Fig. 3.
In lifting a stove-lid the curved and expanded foot 7 is alone used, as shown in Fig. 4:. The combined pan and stove-lid lifter above described is very simple and inexpensive in construction, is capable of being adjusted to pans and trays of difierent sizes and shapes, and may be used without danger of injuring or indenting the article to which it is applied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described lifter, comprising a metal handle socket having integral extensions embracing the handle and also provided in its front face with a slide groove extending across the same, a pair of depending sides of said groove, and an extensible foot piece having a sliding shank mounted and adjustable within said groove, said shank being formed with a longitudinal slot and oppositely disposed segmental eountersinks adjacent to said slot, and a screw passing through said slot into the socket and having its head arranged Within said eountersinks, the said foot piece being expanded in width to form oppositely disposed shoulders for limiting the upward movement thereof, substan- IO tially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES \VESLEY SMITH.
