CAROL DUDLEY, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
COVER FOR TRAYS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAROL DUDLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Trays, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers for trays of nursery chairs and has for its object the provision of an improved article of this nature made of a single piece of sheet metal bent to embrace the tray of a chair and ar ranged in such manner that it may be readily slipped therefrom, for the purpose of cleansing the same.
It is a well known fact that the trays of nursery chairs of ordinary construction are highly unsanitary. Small particles of food get down in the crevices and corners, and collect dirt. Furthermore, these articles of food soon become sour and decay.
It is a particular object of the present invention to provide a cover for these trays formed preferably of aluminum, made in a single piece with rounded edges and without joints, seams or sharp corners upon the interior, so that the tray may be removed and washed as readily as a dish might be, by virtue of which a highly sanitary and cleanly article is produced.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tray having the cover applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the tray with the cover in position.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the body portion of a tray such as is ordinarily used in conjunction with a childs high-chair or nursery chair. As is usual in trays of this character, a binding strip 6 extends entirely therearound and projects a sufficient distance above the upper edge of the body 5 to leave an upstanding flange therearound. The cover indicated at 7 is preferably formed of aluminum and has rounded edges at 8, rounded internal corners at 9 and aperipheral flange 10 which in conjunction with an upstanding wall 11, embraces the flange formed by the upstanding portion of the binding strip 6.

Serial No. 796,250.
At the juncture of the front wall 12 with the rear wall 13 of the cover, the flanges 10 are brought together and united, and are made of slightly greater depth as indicated at 14:, to cause a secure engagement with the rear corners 15 of the tray. Furthermore this deepening of the corners as set forth materially aids in alining the cover withthe tray when the cover is being placed in position. It will therefore be .seen that after each meal the cover 7 of the tray may be removed and washed along with the dishes, said tray being placed in position only at meal time and being thereby as carefully guarded against the collection of infectious or contagious germs as any of the dishes employed in the household.
From the foregoing description, itwill be seen that simple and eificient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes Within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a tray having a plane upper face, a convex front wall comprising substantially a semi-circle, a concave rear wall, an upstanding flange extending entirely around said tray, a one piece metallic cover conforming to the shape of said tray said cover comprising a plane bottom portion adapted to rest upon the upper face of said tray, a flange of inverted U shape integral therewith to thereby constitute an underside recess within which the upstanding flange of the tray is received, the outer side of said flange of inverted U shape being extended downwardly at the juncture of the side and rear walls of the tray to thereby constitute centering and retaining portions for said cover.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CAROL DUDLEY.
